Should we cut Larry Allen?

Thought subject would grab your attention. Larry Allen may be best OL (RG, LT & LG) in Cowboy history & certain a HOF player but he'll be 35 in Nov w/maybe only 1-2 at best left. He'll also cost us $7M+ against the cap in 06 including a $2M bonus in March.

Before the cap, we'd keep our good older players til retirement but this not possible anymore. We eventually cut Emmitt & Troy & Michael (variety of reasons) & we can't keep Larry any longer. Yes, he's been our best (not saying much) OL player this year (except for oft-criticized Adams) but we need pick up a young stud OG (2-3 good ones available in draft) which would be allow us to use money saved to allow another needed player. I'm not going to be happy cutting Larry & he's the last tie to our great 90's SB teams, but if we could cut Emmitt, Troy and Michael (for variety of reasons) then we have to big the bullet with Larry.

BTW: Couple weeks ago somebody also posted possibility of cutting Larry. Don't remember if I posted disagreement citing fact we would then need replace him or if I just thought it w/o posting. But we gotta seriously upgrade our OL for the immediate & long-term future. Also, don't forget Adams also will cost us around $7M against the cap & Riveria also cost us too much to cut him; we have to start somewhere & it is at LG, RT & hopefully center (FA).

We have no choice but to cut him, unless he agrees to a pay cut.

It is getting close to time but do we have a replacement? and do we have a backup to the replacement?

I have mixed feeling on this but if I had to go one way or the other at this stage I would say we need to replace him. Larry at times looked pretty darn good but just was not very consistent in his play and there is no doubt his game is not going to get better at his age

Yes. And while we're at it, ax Tucker and Petitti too.

I would agree with giving Tucker the boot but not a rookie like Petitti. I saw what Tuinie looked like as a young player constantly getting beat yet he turned out to be a darn good tackle for the Cowboys. I think it is too soon to dump a guy like Petitti.

Allen, as much as I hate to say it, should be cut or have his salary GREATLY reduced-like to 1 million a year.

when you need a rt,help at center, and depth on the whle oline i don't think creating another hole is all that good a move. fix the problems then you can look at whether or not you can upgrade at l.a. spot.

Thanks for not going crazy in response. Not jumping for joy either but we have to start now. Do we have successor to Allen or even backup to successor? Nope, unless Peterman is better then we know, but Peterman certainly could be the backup. To make this work we have to sign best OG in draft, Max Jean Gilles; haven't seen the guy play & don't know if he LG or RG but experts rave about him & also say he can even play RT in NFL. Supposed to be very athletic, etc., 6-4, 345 -- sounds like another Larry Allen in his younger days. But if we make this pick, Ireland's evaluation of him has to concur with the experts or it's a no go. But that decision has to be made before 1 March when Allen entitled to his bonus.

The situation is different with Larry than it was with Troy and Emmitt. With Troy, Dallas simply could not afford to keep him. They were up against the cap limit. Dallas now has some room to keep Allen's salary although it would be beneficial if they could redo the contract. Parcells came in looking for a new start and that was the big reason Emmitt was gone. I hope Dallas tries to keep Allen around for as long as possible. They don't need to go out of their way, but he still contributes. And with all the other holes on the line, they may not be able to afford to let him go.

Let's see... the biggest problem we had ALL SEASON was the play of our offensive line.

So the solution is to cut the ONLY ONE THAT PLAYED ABOVE AVERAGE?

Would like to see a list of potential FA guards before I answer. If we can get a decent to good one, then I say LA either take's a pay cut or we say thanks for the memories.

One thing is for sure, LA has no long term future with this team. Neither does Rivera. Gosh, we really need to invest in some YOUNG OL this offseason!
