Should we match Philly's offer for Fowler?

Should the Cowboys match the offer that Philly made to Ryan Fowler? I'm torn on this because Bradie James isn't the be-all-end-all at MLB in my opinion, and Fowler can potentially challenge him for the starting job, and be his backup at worst. Plus, as an undrafted free agent, Fowler seemed to stick around, and he took over the mark of most special teams tackles.

But Dallas groomed Fowler to be more than just a special-teamer, and is it possible that Philly is now poised to reap the benefits of him being a solid MLB for them? If that’s the case then I hope Dallas antes-up to keep Fowler. Otherwise they'll be faced with a gaping hole at the MLB position that they will need to fill it in the draft. Turning to the draft means that they will have to groom a new guy all over gain and go through his growing pains. Why do that when you have already successfully done it with a guy that is ready to start? For that reason alone, I’m leaning towards hoping Dallas re-signs Fowler. What do you think?

No, let Fowler go.

He's easily replaceable via the Draft or FA.

Personally, I'd look at C. Polk or Godfrey in FA, and then use the Draft to pick up another 1-2 LBs.

$4 million next year for Fowler, a special teams guy.

Let me think for 10 seconds.............

Nope, think I will pass. Let the Beagles overpay for him.

Fowler cannot challenge James for the starting spot.

Philly thought Mark Simoneau was hte asnwer for their problems at MLB when they first let Trotter go.

I would like to because he's one hell of a special team player but it seems like he want to be a starter and with the talent that surrounds Cowboys it doesn't look like that's going to happen any time soon and I believe Eagles could use him more than the Dallas Cowboys could.

Overall I say no even though he could help us. On the other hand yes, if we sign him, I think we should trade em to the Eagles for a 7th Round draft choice.

Thoughts?

why cant the Cowboys ever trade players? The Broncos trade players about to retire while the boys get nothing in return time and time again for decent players and Fowler is just another in a long line!!!!

While I think there is still time for the Cowboys to make a counter offer ...

LB Agrees To Offer Sheet
posted: March 11, 2007
By CHRIS McPHERSON

Restricted free agent linebacker Ryan Fowler said that Philadelphia would be a good fit for him when he visited on Friday. Apparently, the Eagles felt the same way. The team announced Sunday that they have agreed to terms with Fowler on a four-year offer sheet. Once the offer sheet is formally submitted, his former team, the Dallas Cowboys, has seven days to match. If the Cowboys choose not to match the offer, the Eagles do not owe compensation to Dallas since Fowler entered the league as a rookie free agent.

Fowler will add depth and solidify the special teams (possibly the MLB spot) for the Eagles.

he was pretty stout in goal line situations and in short yardage situations. He is a solid linebacker and stuck around for four years with Bill Parcells, for a reason. He additionally was a prominent contributor on special teams. That kind of skills become game changers...

Also, his departure, along with the release of Al Singleton; added to Greg Ellis coming off a MAJOR injury, add in Bradie James showing some dead roots, and Kevin Burnett never quite formalizing his ability to contribute...well, the linebacker group, the backbone of the 3-4, is getting thin and showing some bare spots...that, can't be good.

Dallas will have to think long and hard on this one, but I think that price tag will be a little steep for a backup player...unless he is given a chance to compete against James in camp....

I figure Fowler is gone, but why couldn't he compete with Bradie James for the starting spot? Seriously.

All he brings to the table is ST play and that's too much for a ST guy.

Good luck in Philly

I'll raise a stein and broast with you all day long...

but if you have noticed, recently departed Cowboy linebackers are making a pretty good living as 'starters' throughout the NFL....Fowler well could be the next!

As a replacement, I would like the signing of Godfrey...but that is another consideration, as he doesn't have a long-term quality to him...

There will be cheaper alternatives for his role here in Dallas. Good luck to him except when he plays the 'boys.

I think Dallas could fill his role at a cheaper price than trying to outbid Philly

Hard to say, as we didn't see much of him last season. Obviously the Eagles think he's got a lot of potential if they are going to shell out those types of bucks for a 2nd stringer. Hard to justify those bucks.

Excellent point. If Fowler succeeds in Philly what does that say about our LB corps given it's performance at the end of last season (post Ellis)? I'm scratching my head over this whole thing. Philadelphia is not known for paying large dollars to anyone. This sounds incredibly out of character for them and I'm confused.

Is this a 3-4 vs 4-3 thing where Fowler's skills will emerge in a 4-3 scheme?
