I wouldn't exactly call Family Guy a show that 'didn't quite make it'. It's been hugely successful.

Family Guy, That 70's Show, Cheers, MASH, and Friends are sitcoms that I could watch till I die.

The West Wing, CSI, Law and Order, the stable of shows on Discovery/Military/NGEO, and a handful of miniseries make up the rest of my TV consumption.

The only ones I can think of that didn't quite make it were Boston Public, HBO's Deadwood, and HBO's Rome. They all started out strong but floundered within a few seasons.

Space: Above and Beyond= 1 season with so much promise but put up against 60 minutes.

Earth 2= a show that had so much potential if they had gone to a second season.

Roswell= a guilty pleasure that started very well then they got fixated on Heigle's boobs and soap opera.

China Beach= by far the best Vietnam series ever done; another year could have told a bunch more stories sadly.

There are a few otthers over the last 20 years that go along as well.

Frankly very few in the last 10 years or so that I care about at all.

I really thought that show was funny. Something about that guy just makes me laugh. "Cabin Boy" was a god awful flick, but something about it just makes me laugh and laugh.

I agree with Deadwood... that show really needed two more seasons to finish the story arc. Anything much more than that would have been too much, but it ended prematurely.

Firefly is another show that, while I didn't watch it at the time, I've since seen all the episodes on Netflix and really think it should have been given more than the one season it got.

I have to chuckle at Get a Life. I love that show! I don't know how long of a shelf life it could have had, though. Sometime the the brightest stars burn the fastest. :D

HBO promised the Deadwood creators two 2 hour movies to end it but they never happened. All of the actors moved on to other projects. So it's pretty much dead. It's a shame.

The movie was called Serenity.

The show is basically a Sci-Fi Western hybrid.

The main character is an homage to Han Solo. He's a rouge pilot with a conscience who, after being part of an unsuccessful rebellion against an evil "empire" now operates a pseudo-legal smuggling/shipping operation on the outer fringes of the galaxy... which has many "frontier" motifs.

He has a crew of colorful characters, including the girl from the new Terminator series.

They get into a lot of scrapes with the government/empire as well as with other assorted outlaw types.

They're basically always just trying to make enough money to live on, and then usually, at some point, the main guy's conscience is tested and he has to decide if he's going to look out for himself or do the right thing. Like I said earlier, a lot of shades of Han Solo in him.

It's a great show though, and like Joss Whedon's other stuff, the writing and dialogue is great and there's a lot of humor in it and good storytelling.

Don't watch the movie until you're done watching the show, but all in all it's a good finale for a show that ended far too early.

It still makes me mad the cancelled it . Not only that but they said they were going to make a two part (2 hour each part) movie to tie up all the ends but then did not.

I remember reading an interview with Ian McShire (sp?), the one that played swearigin, and he said they told them they were going to do the movies and they never heard anything and later figured it was a no go when he found out they tore the sets down.
