With the 2014 NFL draft just 10 days away, one of the more intriguing storylines to follow is theDallas Cowboys’ growing interest in Johnny Football. Jerry Jones has reportedly been intrigued by the possibility of adding Johnny Manziel to the roster, and CBS analyst Jim Nantz recently passed along a rumor that strongly links the two sides.

If Nantz’s comments are to be believed, the Cowboys will be doing everything in their power to come away from Day 1 of the draft with Manziel tabbed as their quarterback of the future.

“I can say this, he’s going to be the guy everyone wants to see. I’ve heard this rumor for a month — the Cowboys will figure out a way to get Manziel,” Nantz said via ESPN Cleveland. “Wherever Manziel goes, there is going to be more clamoring about Johnny Manziel than there would be about Blake Bortles going No. 1 or [Jadeveon] Clowney going No. 1, or anyone else. This is a guy that there’s just a tremendous interest in everything he does.”

The Cowboys are always one of the most talked about teams in the league, and selecting Manziel would certainly keep the team in the headlines.

Why don't we just offer him a contract tomorrow? Let Roger Goodell go explain to a judge why a player shouldn't be able to live and work where he wants to live and work.

I wouldn't mind it, but we currently have a QB on our roster that has a ton of guaranteed money in his contract.

Romo's back must be in pretty bad shape. Maybe the media would consider applying logic for why a high-round quarterback selection makes sense in that regard?

Nah. Such effort would be deemed as something akin to work.

I was just thinking this. Either Romo is in bad shape, or they want competition to push Romo. Or, maybe they are trying to stir up, someone offering them a boat load for a trade?

I have no problems with Manziel if the Dallas front office actually has their collective crap together this year (No more Floyd issues) and have him as their consensus top player available. They need a legit plan if/when Romo is done and I just have this weird suspicion that Weeden and Hanie are not high level starters in this league.

I just don't understand how this is even being discussed. Unless Romos back is much worse than the team leads on, or Jerry has a loophole to get out of his contract that the rest of us don't know about it wont happen. Romo would be here just about through the end of Manziels rookie contract. During that whole time all you would have is a qb controversy created by the media. If this were a rebuild job then yes it makes sense To go after a QB early. Jerry Jones doesn't rebuild though. Nor would Jason Garrett and the rest of the coaching staff be happy with a rebuilding season in a contract year. I'm just not buying into all this just yet.

A high-round quarterback selection will not be coming in under the expectation of competing with Romo. The expection will be that a high draft pick will come in and supplant Romo.

Romo is a franchise quarterback. First-round quarterback selections are projected as practically immediate starting, franchise quarterbacks. Current teams (including those headed by guys named Jerry) do not bring in a projected franchise quarterback to replace a entrenched franchise quarterback unless the elder quarterback is about to receive the proverbial boot. Romo's not about to get thrown to the curb unless there is an issue which threatens his ability to play NFL level football in the here and now. The only threat preceived pertains to Romo's back.

Now, before the "Hey! What about Aaron "Discount Double-Check" Rodgers?" gets tossed in, it should be noted that Green Bay was deceived by Brett Favre into believing he was going to retire sooner rather than later. Favre waffling caused Rodgers to remain on the sidelines for as long as he did. Tony Romo does not carry the clout that Favre had in Green Bay. His understandable $100 million supply versus demand contract will not insulate him from being the victim of an invested upgrade at the position. If, for example, Johnny Manziel gets tabbed, Romo's looking at a much shorter season in 2014 than he expects... and not because of an unfortunate injury. Jones will expect him to start in the short-term and he would deal with the ramifications of Romo's humongous contract afterwards. JMO.

Remember this -- Over and over again Jerry has made it clear that generating revenue and national exposure is as important as is winning. The circus of Johnny Football being drafting and playing for the Cowboys would increase both revenue and exposure to unprecedented levels.

That's why this is a possible.
