Now onto the rest of what was a very eventful draft weekend.

Topics of the day:

14. Stop killing the Cowboys. Just stop. Dallas got the No. 1 center on many boards at 31 (Travis Frederick), filling a gaping hole; an offensive tight end to someday replace Jason Witten (Gavin Escobar) at 47; and a 51-game starter at wideout from Baylor, Terrance Williams (who averaged 19 yards a catch last year) at 74. As one GM told me Sunday: "Frederick might be a reach, but if you get a starter for your team for six or eight years -- at any position -- isn't that worth the 31st pick overall in a lousy draft?"

I think that quote at the end is pretty telling about what we accomplished in this draft.

This draft might not have been as focused on the big uglies as people wanted it to be, but we still got a good haul. People tend to be overlooking the talent we added because of the reach in the first round and the fact that we didn't address the DL.

Yeah, I cracks me up when people say, "we'll, I guess it would be worth it if he starts for us for 10 years." Um, duh.

This draft sucked, badly.

Guys like Tannyhill and Dez Bryant would've been top 5 picks in this crop. Probably 1, 2.

Dallas DID have a solid draft.
They hit solid singles or doubles at every pick. It could turn out that 5-6 of these guys may still be around even for a second contract. That's real solid work if you're thinking long term.

Maybe none of us would have drafted exactly the same--I know I wouldn't have.

But I'm a scientist/businessman sitting in front of a freaking pc (or iPad).
So easy for me to say.

If Frederick can be as good as Gurode, whom was a 2nd round converted guard - then I'd be thrilled. But a pick at the end of the 1st in this years draft is the equivalent of a mid round 2nd in an average to above average draft.

That depends! If your team as so bad that a guy rated much lower than the pick is a starter for years...is that an improvement to become a champion or just plugging in a guy that was better than below average? There are different levels if starting as we have seen. Frederick could be stud. Just clarifying that getting a starter can say something about the team or player.

Calling this 2013 draft class a "lousy" draft just doesn't capture how bad this draft was. I don't think there is even a sure pick in the whole 1st round in 2013.

Top pick Eric Fisher? Get real! Who was the most talented player he went up against his whole career at Central Michigan? Like most others, I never saw him play.

Central Michigan 2012 Football Schedule

Thursday, Aug. 30 vs. Southeast Missouri State
Saturday, Sept. 8 vs. Michigan State
Saturday, Sept. 22 at Iowa
Saturday, Sept. 29 at Northern Illinois*
Saturday, October 6 at Toledo*
Friday, October 12 vs. Navy
Saturday, October 20 vs. Ball State*
Saturday, October 27 vs. Akron*
Saturday, November 3 vs. Western Michigan*
Saturday, November 10 at Eastern Michigan*
Saturday, November 17 vs. Miami*
Friday, November 23 at Massachusetts*

The big question here is will fans have the ability to be patient with these guys. Frederick will obviously start (especially since Jerry mandated it), but Escobar is the only other player that has a shot at starter level minutes this season. The others will be second level players and special teams contributors barring injury. 2014 is where a few of these guys might prove if the picks were good ones.

He's not nearly the athlete that Gurode was so he'll have to make up for it with his smarts.

Gurode was a much better talent than this guy but Fredericks knowledge of the game really stands out when he is playing. Gurode was very shaky in that area.

This WAS a weak draft at the top.

But using Eric Fisher as an example does not hold water.

And using the non-elite conference garbage is even weaker.
He played what was in front of him.
And when he went to all-star games and faced "elite" players for entire weeks at a time he dominated thier arses too.

The fact that you took the time to print out the entire schedule is telling in and of itself.

Maybe you should have done that for Ware, Jerry Rice, Brett Fave, Walter Payton, Richard Dent, Michael Strahan, Merlin Olsen, Randy Moss, Terrell Owens, Mean Joe Green etc...or if you want a lineman...how about Willie Roaf (HOFer)...or Larry Allen. lol

That conference snob stuff gets old.

Simply because the top played at a small school means it's indicative of an entire draft? Not sure I buy into that. I'm pretty sure that was factored into the equation when the 32 teams were evaluating him.

Actually Gurode came in and started as a rookie at center. He played both at colorado. It was always dumb to try and make a guard out of him.

It's a two RB league now, so Randle will get plenty of time. Basically your 2nd TE and 2nd RB are starters in today's league.

Williams will replace Miles after this year, so he will learn for a year. I see no problem with that.

Webb, Wilcox and Holloman are for depth/ST and future starters.

In 2003 you probably could've started at center or guard, this team was that deprived of talent in any area.

Again, thank goodness for BP - guy at least made this team relevant again.

I'm not saying he wont start for us for 10 years but I am saying that when they turn out like Carpenter, nobody ever comes back and refunds your 1st round pick either.

It's not a given that anybody is going to be a 10 year starter or that they will even ever start.

I see both sides here.

They think Williams is pretty NFL ready and alluded to packages with Austin in the slot and Dez and him on the outside. If his adjustment is pretty quick that would be fun to see.

I think he has a valid point.

The Cowboys believe Frederick will solidify the OL for a decade. If they're right, who gives a crap what Mike Mayock thinks? If they're wrong, are they wronger than the guys who pulled the trigger on Tony Mandarich, Blair Thomas, Ryan Leaf, Rick Mirer, Mike Mamula, Heath Shuler, Courtney Brown, Ki-jana Carter, Vernon Gholston, etc, etc, etc?

Frederick reminds me of Gurode physically. Gurode could have been a great NFL player but had focus issues. He was said to be very intelligent and sounded intelligent in interviews; however, on the field he just seemed to lose focus and awareness at the very worst times.

I really think some players like Gurode and MartyB might have Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD or ADHD).

Frederick is very intelligent. He is an Engineering major. On the local radio interview he was talking about creating apps and "I use a lot of Linux" etc.. It was not the typical interview with an athlete.
