SI: NFC scout says about Witten "He’s almost resigned now to catching the ball and falling down."

Can't say I disagree at all. Generally, where Witt catches it is where it will be spotted. Not a game changer anymore, yet still a reliable pros pro though.
Yep, if he has to carry a defender a full yard for the 1st, odds aren't good.

He is a one trick pony, at this point. He's only good for a 5 yard out route.

By my count...9th in YAC yards for TEs last year. Does this scout consider the QBs who were trying to get him the ball failed miserably or that he was the focal point of defenses since we had no one else who scared them on the outside?

Per catch or overall? Per catch is what we'd need here. Otherwise, volume will inflate the number.

I am surprised that Tyler Eifert is that low.

He only grabbed 52 balls last year, due to the injury. He got more YAC per touch than Jason did. Jason's YAC numbers are going to be inflated by volume. But the fact that there are a lot of guy ahead or right next to him who had a lot less reception tells what you what you need know. Sadly, the scout is right. He's not a real threat after the catch anymore.

Overall yards....

As i stated earlier though, he has never been a huge YAC guy, even in his prime.

This is NOT news people. Tony Romo is not nearly what he was either. I think people really don't want to focus on how Tony played last year pre and post injury. The best of these 2 guys is way behind them. Wake up!

They won't want to hear that about Romo, but it's true.

Whatever championship run we could have had with him, died out a couple of years ago.

If this premise about Witten is true, how could it possibly matter? He's usually twelve yards up the field, unless in the end zone.

I was going to wait until more posters embarrassed themselves before posting the YAC stats. Oh well :)

Man, everyone is bashing the scout, but he's right. Witten got 3.29 YAC per touch. That's just not very good. Kelce got 7.44, Ebron got 6.15, Daniels got 6.04, Reed got 5.56, Clay got 4.78, Olson got 4.56, Ertz got 4.28, Barnige got 4.22, Walker got 4.1...

I love Witten and always will, but he's not a threat after the catch. I'm spot checking, but I've yet to see a full time TE with fewer YAC per reception. The scout was right.

He was 12th in the league last year.

Right, because why would anyone like Witten? What has he ever done for this team? All of us "sheep" need to start rooting for a real TE. LOL. Cmon man.

NFL records and achievements
  • Most receptions in a single season by a tight end: 110 (2012)
  • Most receptions in a single game by a tight end: 18 (October 28, 2012)
  • Second most receptions and receiving yards by a tight end in NFL history (behind Tony Gonzalez)
  • 2012 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award winner
  • 2015 Only the 2nd TE in history to catch 1,000 or more receptions.
  • 10th in receptions in NFL history: 1,013 (as of December 20, 2015)
Cowboys franchise records
  • Most career receptions: 1,013 (as of December 20, 2015)
  • Most receptions in a single game: 18 (October 28, 2012)
  • Most consecutive games played: 201 (as of December 20, 2015)
Ignored

There isn't a scout or GM who would take Witten(and his stats) over Gronk.

Witten catches pass, Gronk dominates the game. No team goes into a game thinking: Witten is gonna beat me.

No he's gonna catch 5 for 56 and that's about it.

Gronk has been the #1 pass catcher on a SB Champion, that wasn't anchored by a great defense. What about Witten?

The miracles Romo used to pull of on a regular basis...he is really incapable of at this point. Unfortunately....the player is the last one to figure that out. It was INSTINCTIVE for Romo to try to make a play in a preseason game scrambling around. This defense would have to be so much better for us to win with a healthy aging Romo. Much like the defense had to be with Peyton and the Broncos last year.

Love Witten, but it would be nice if we had a capable backup that could move into Witten's role, but I am not that enamored with what we have curently
