SI: NFC scout says about Witten "He’s almost resigned now to catching the ball and falling down."

Tony and Jason are the same beast. They are both near or at the end. That happens. Thats pro sports. there is still a future in Dallas..just need to find the players. Prescott could be a good find.

I understand tthat people want to stand up for witten. Hes a cowboy and one of our own. Loyalty- i get it. With that being said, his days of trucking corners, safeties, and linebackers are over. But that doesnt mean he still cant catch passes, get open, and be useful.

It pains me to see 185-190lb corners shoe string tackle him. If ur 265, guys 50-80lbs smaller than you should have no chance. You bringing a load with you. You line up bam morris and tell claiborne to tackle him 10x, and claiborne should be looking at neck and spine surgery after the game. I was walking in a bar last week and a 170 lb dude came running into me not looking an he bounced back like 5 ft and spilled his michelob ultra all over the place. I didnt move but maybe 1-2 inches Thats what should happen when lil corners hit witten

Another example would be when Tyron smith or Collins goes out to run block. Corners, safeties, and linebackers have no chance, they are giving up toooo much weight. You can't expect 180-230 to stop 320-350. No way. Maybe you get lucky once but 9 outta 10x u gonna get blown back.

Luv witten. Hes a hofer for sure and he can still get open and catch, buy trucking dudes i havent seen him do in awhile. Thats just father time. Nothing to be ashamed about.

LOL @ The idea that the guy that's 2nd all time TE but has never been considered the best TE in the league is somehow "overrated" now.

These guys can claim all they want but Witten moves the chains. He knows how to get open and is tough as nails. Next time he drags a couple of defenders past the 1st down mark I will be sure to revisit this thread.

Don't forget that this guy doesn't even talk about how well Witten blocks. This is the age of athletic TE'S like Gonzalez, Gates, and Graham, where all it takes to be considered a HOF worthy TE is receiving credentials. That would make the old school greats like Ditka, Bavaro, and Mackey puke. Witten is a humongous part of this freight train of a running offense that everyone else in the league mistakes for only being an "offensive line thing".

Fantasy football analysts will never get what really makes Witten special. He's the most complete TE in NFL history.

He averaged 3 yds per catch in YAC. When you consider that probably 80 percent of his passes are in the middle of the field, there is always defenders close by. He also runs a lot of patterns to the sidelines. If he made his living down the seams, then you would have something to talk about.

and? Witten was never "another wide receiver" He was /is a complete package TE that you dont see as much. He catches it, and secures it. A catch is a catch, if he gets a first down and falls down, are we penalized? I dont get the article? Should he always catch it and run it in for a TD. Id rather him not lose the ball trying to be a hero. I dont see a problem with "catch, secure, end the play and keep the ball"

This is the best post ever going into the season opener.

Witten will see this and be absolutely pissed off and ready to do something about it.

I love the anonymous scout. You want to shred a future Hall Of Famer, Then at least get your man card out and put your name to it. And it's so hard to believe that a 34 year old Tight End is declining. You gotta be kidding me? That never happens. Well I see him falling down a lot this season then. They're still going to throw to him because they know he's going to catch it

They won't want to hear that about Romo, but it's true.

Whatever championship run we could have had with him, died out a couple of years ago.

Don't want to hear what? He was fine before the injury (basically 4 tds to 1 int - one td taken away by a horrid call, and an int right into Street's hands. Even his other int was tipped to the defender).

After the injury he wasn't healed and had been out a really long time.

The guy has caught 1,020 passes, still blocks like an extra offensive tackle, and has missed one game in his career. And this intrepid scout comes up with this BS? Laughable.

In my book, Witten has earned the right to fall down whenever the heck he wants to.

I love the anonymous scout. Scouts are so good at their job that they can shred a future Hall Of Famer. I'm just shocked that at 34 years of age, Witten is declining. That never happens to football players.

3 yards is bad. He made his living where most TEs make their living. Over the span of his career, he's an all-time great. But he's simply not a threat after the catch anymore.

Nobody is questioning his career. Based on this board, WItten is overrated today. Vastly. He's one of the best TE of all time. He's still a very solid, dependable player. But if Cowboys fans can't be objective about one of his weaknesses, then yes: He's overrated.

Bring up stats to prove that view...he's unstoppable in achieving 800+ yards. I don't care if he uses a cane and then does a hop, step, and jump.
He hasn't come close to 800 yards either of the last two seasons.

Witten's still very valuable, but it's also true that he's not the guy he was. His yards per reception the last three years: 11.7, 11.0, 9.3. He was down at 9.4 in 2012 but he also caught 110 passes that year. We'll see if he can bounce back this year, but the end isn't too far away. Not sure why any of this is controversial.

You are right on all counts, but the yards per catch part is misleading. Last year the Cowboys didn't have a quarterback for 12 games. And back in 2012, the o-line was such a mess the Cowboys used short passes to Witten to substitute for runs (and to keep Romo from getting killed).
