Is there some sort of rule that you have to have an ex-athlete in the booth? Can't you just have two people who are, you know, knowledgable about football? Isn't it enough that the neanderthals and ebonics crowd dominate the pre-game shows?

As opposed to the other end of the spectrum which brings us legendary analysts such as Tony Kornheiser and Dennis Miller.

Those guys are extremes. Instead of one Joe Buck or one Al Michaels, put in two. No one ever accused those two guys of being ignorant about the game.

Never thought Joe Buck, Terry, Jimmy and Howie would be associated with "EBONICS".

Generally, ex-players/coaches are more knowledgable than any ole John Doe off the street

maybe about Xs and Os...but there are guys who didnt play that are just as qualified and better in the booth than athletes.

Exactly. Guys like Keith Jackson and Michaels don't just call the play by play; they talk about the game as well. Just think of all the jobs these ex-jocks are denying well-qualified broadcasting students.

Neanderthals? Care to elaborate on that?

Is there a Starving Broadcasters Foundation? :laugh1:

For just ten cents a day, you too can help an unemployed color analyst call the replay of last week's games.

That was Howard's point way back when, and he'd turn over in his grave to hear that some ex-players now feel no one should be doing color analysis unless he played.

Imo, there are slugs amongst both the ex-players and the non-players.

Give me a good ol articulate, insightful 'ebonics-neanderthal' like Sterling Sharpe anytime. I don't much mind Simms or Aikman either. But Randy Cross after all these years is horrific.

Agreed with The Lady. Sharpe (the elder) is very good, as is Aikman. Simms doesn't do it for me, but he is far from bad. On the other hand, Jaws is fantastic, imo, the best there is.

On the other hand, you have plenty of poor 'broadcasters.' I actually don't think John Michaels is very good, and don't prefer to listen to him.

Sterling is very good. Better than his brother.

I like Dan Fouts at the college level. He switched to doing play-by-play this year just like his father used to do. Bob Griese is good at the college level as well. The Moose is a good one for the pros. Plenty of good announcers out there that were also former players.

I like the insight a former player or coach can bring sometimes. Sometimes they just aren't too good. Dan Reeves has done a couple of college games and was terrible. Staubach did a few games back in the day and he was kind of dull.

As long as they are good announcers I really don't care if they had a background in the NFL or not.

Ditka, Parcells at ESPN, Goose on the sidelines, Dierdorf, etc.

Don't forget the best of 'em all.....

LMAO! Ditka and Parcells!

Granted Bill was boring as hell, sidestepping many issues. But Mike is the bomb. He has has his schtick like most of them, but I love his "what you're doing NOW is all that counts" mantra.

He badmouthed Brunnell today - then look what happened.

I like Dierdorf too - but Goose's dynamite personality just hasn't managed to shine on the sidelines. Pity, he was the "Hard Knocks" mega-star.

John Michaels, the mutated love child of John Madden and Al Michaels.

This just begs for a photoshop
