Trotter, Singleton Visit
Stressing that the team is always keeping an eye on players who could make their roster better, Gruden confirmed on Thursday that the team had held workouts for free agent linebackers Jeremiah Trotter and Al Singleton.
Trotter, a four-time Pro Bowler at middle linebacker, has played nine seasons in the league, including seven (1998-01, 2004-06) with the Philadelphia Eagles. Though he is coming off his fourth Pro Bowl campaign in 2006, he was released by the Eagles on Wednesday.
Singleton is a free agent after playing the last four seasons with the Dallas Cowboys. A starter on the Buccaneers’ 2002 Super Bowl team, he first entered the NFL as Tampa Bay’s fourth-round pick in 1997.
The Buccaneers recently lost two linebackers, second-year man Antoine Cash and rookie Sam Olajubutu, to the injured reserve list.
“We have some injuries and we want to get better,” said Gruden. “We want to win, we want to get better and if there are players out there who can help us do that, we’ll do that.”
Could Trotter or Singleton help the Buccaneers?
“I don’t know, that’s why we’re working them out,” said Gruden. “I can’t comment on anything other than we’re going to work them out and see for ourselves. Obviously they’ve had a long history in the NFL and an impressive one at that. But I don’t want to speculate. We’re just going to go to work here and see how they’re doing.”
