The Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday released Pro Bowl defensive end Simeon Rice, FOXSports.com has learned. In a meeting between Rice and Tampa management, the team asked the 12th-year player out of Illinois to take a pay cut. When Rice refused, the team released him.

The timing is odd, to say the least, as Rice showed up and checked in to Bucs training camp before being called in to the meeting.
The Bucs left open the option for Rice to return, though that does not seem likely at this point.
Rice began his career in Arizona, before moving to Tampa Bay prior to the 2001 season. Rice has recorded double-digit tackles in eight of his 11 pro seasons, including every year from 2001-05. The 32-year-old Rice has also consistently been among the league leaders in forced fumbles. The No. 3 overall pick in the 1996 draft, Rice was a two-time Pro Bowler for the Bucs, making the team in 2003 and 2004.

Depends, how much does he want, is his shoulder okay, has he gained too much weight, and so on...

enough to have the Bucs cut him, he's a huge liability against the run though and overpursues too much

ES already has 3 pages of "sign him up".

Someone mentioned he failed a physical.

That stuff never matters with Snyder. He sees a (has been) name and he writes a check. Deion Sanders, Bruce Smith, Mark Brunell. Danny knows that the guy was ONCE dominant so he'll pay him dominant money to fade out the remainder of his NFL career.

They should sign him (Commanders). Hed start for them in a heartbeat.

That being said, if they do, it doesn't matter much. He's no longer the Simeon Rice circa 2002. I wouldn't worry too much if they did. But it would be an improvement.

He could still be a very effective situational pass rusher, and just the type of speed rusher that gives Flozell fits. I, for one, would not enjoy seeing him in Burgandy and Gold.

That's what I was thinking. Give him about 25 snaps a game in passing situations and he'd make a few plays for you, I'd bet.

Still, his days as an every down starting DE in this league are over with. He'd end up allowing about 200 yds rushing right over him. He tires and can't stand up against the run... he never really had the stomach for defending the run, even in his heyday.

For the right price, I think it would be the smart move for the Skins to sign him. Their woeful pass rush could use him in situations.

The skins will get him.

He was fun to watch in his prime but that has passed him, and he has really fallen off in the past two years. He still has great hands, but he lost his speed.

haha, let the skins have him.

There are 30 other teams besides us and the Skins, you know...

But if the Skins did sign him, he'd fit in well with Portis and Taylor.

there are other teams....don't think any of them were dead last in sacks last year, terrible against the run and have a history of overpaying for older players on the slide. Washington was/is all 3.

This has Washington written all over it.
