there is an uncanny similarities between this team and the team of the 90's and how it was built. obviously in the 90's we didn't have salary cap to deal with and trades were more frequent (and more willing partners), but Johnson completely turned over the roster and built a deep, talented young team through the draft. even down to the players and positions. I am stating the obvious, but aikman, emmitt....dak zeke. a brash experienced WR in Irvin and suddenly Bryant is the sr. member of the trio with the passion and fiery attitude. and similarly this team has been built through the draft.
aikman and emmitt were just having fun and seems the same with Zeke. the great OL of the 90's and that's what we have and that line was built before arrival of the triplets. a deep Wr group, that although none would be a primary receiver are capable of hurting the defense and need to be accounted for. even Beasley, a smallish WR with speed is similar to Kevin Williams in the 90's. and of course Novaceck compared to Witten. both Sr. members of the teams.
and now the defense is eerie similar. the secondary was deep and this secondary seems the same way. the strength was in Woodson, a heady cover safety who Byron Jones reminds me of. and the DL, deep. people forget how we continuously rotated the DL in the 90's wearing out offenses as opposed to the Offense wearing out the defense. 4th quarters was when we closed deals and we saw some of that last year. the one missing ingredient then was a dominant pass rusher and we got Haley. seems like we are in the same place and trying to swing for the fences with Taco Charlton.
and I think this team, despite the ending grew up a lot last year. they learned to win games. they learned they are able to come from behind and win. they learned they can close games. they started to believe in themselves. and we lost in the playoffs in 91, to Detroit. a team we had faced earlier in the year. the team grew up in that playoff year.
Does this guarantee a superbowl appearance, or win this coming year? no. playoffs are playoffs. there are no guarantees and plus this is the salary cap era, the all teams are equal era. but I can't help to see the uncanny similarities between the two team and how they were put together.
and the last point is on garrett, which I am sure will stir emotions. Johnson was a geat coach, but he also had a great staff. great coordinators, Turner, Butch Davis, Dave Wandstedd, a lot of whom went on to become head coaches, although not seeing the same success, they were great coordinators. Johnson was more of a manager, maestro than involved in game planning, play calling, etc. he put his staff together and he trusted them. He managed the team culture, the vision, players and made sure it was all about competition and football.
Garrett is in similar position, he has two former head coaches, who didn't succeed as head coaches, but were great coordinators. he is now more of a manager and maestro. He has learned to trust his coaching staff, has created a vision and build a culture around competition and football. We should expect that, as he played and learned under Johnson.
hopefully, this team learned from their playoff loss last year and will show the ability to get over the hump and bring home the 6th trophy. there is just this feeling about this team. they are just having fun playing football.
