Listening on my way to work today, Kirwan was equating Leftwich's situation this year with Culpepper's last year. Basically, Culpepper had always seen certain coverages due to the fact that Moss was at WR and as he got used to seeing those coverages he got better and better at reading them quickly and what to do to them. When Moss left, defenses were able to change things up and disguise things better so that was a big part of Culpepper's troubles.
Now, Smith was not Moss but he was quite good and certainly the Jags number one receiving threat. Leftwich will start the year with no clear bigtime threat and hopefully we will be able to throw some different coverages at him to trip him up, more importantly coverages that allow Roy to play close to the LOS and slow up that JAg running game. Do that and they should not be able to generate anything against us on opening day.
