Joe Gibbs wouldn't talk about Shawn Springs' future with the team Friday.

"I think that one is again, one of those, I'm not going to talk a lot about, but I think you have to work through that situation there," Gibbs said. It looks like Springs will be cut and become a very rich man as a free agent. This is an example of Washington's cap spending in the past hurting them.

He costs too much for his lack of performance. Sounds a lot like a certain LB56 from last season that the Skins got blasted for releasing.

Funny, for the past two seasons Commanders fans have been talking about him being an All Pro CB.

He was excellent in 2005, but this is a cap and age issue for the Skins. My guess is that the Skins want to sign some more big FA's again and at Springs age and having health problems at the end of '05 and this year, they are going to let him go.

If Dallas can get him for a reasonable 2 year deal and try him at FS, I really wouldn't mind that.

I've read some skins stuff in the recent days and some of those goombahs are actually thinking that they may go after Fred Smoot.

I suppose thats one way of working the cap, eh Danny-boy. Let some of your better performers go because you don't want to pay them and as soon as they are cut because they aren't getting the job done........go out and resign them to lower contracts.

A couple of weeks ago there was a piece in the Washington Post about the Foreskins moving him to FS and going after a CB like Clements. He is not the same player he used to be by a long shot.

That sounds like a logical plan but I think I feel a little more safe with Watkins back there. Springs will be 32 next month and coming off an injury plagued season he is at that stage where injuries will be a major concern. The days of corners playing past 32 and still being productive is a thing of the past ( thats why Henry is a two season tops from being cut and why CB is a need we need to be addressing).

I actually like Springs and I rather have a 32 year Springs than a 35 year Glenn but thats just me! Glenn is cheaper and probably a cooler teammate for them.

And that, my friends, is how the Skins are able to pursue free agents each year-- they have to cut loose some still-productive players who carry hefty price tags, courtesy of Danny Boy's ridiculous contracts... this results in a lack of cohesion, a lack of continuity from season to season... 2 years ago, I thought Danny Boy had FINALLY figured it out, and Skins fans were woofing about how they were finally gonna have some of that continuity... then last year, the Mad Midget went back to what has never worked for him before... LOL...

Why?

We need better play at free safety. Signing Springs to a reasonable 2 year deal that's not a cap killing contract would at least give us a shot at perhaps solving the issue. If Watkins is playing well, then we could either cut Springs at minimal cost or have him work as a backup and put him in the nickel and have Roy rove around like Polamalu does in the nickel package.

The reward isn't long term, but the risk wouldn't be very big either.

It's more of a precaution than anything else. I don't want Watkins' progress to be impeded, but who is to say he's going to improve and play well next season? Who is to say he won't get injured?

A lot of people want us to draft a safety, but then you're going to be stuck with 3 very young safeties (Watkins, Roy, and the draft pick). And moving Henry to FS is giving up a decent CB and basically continuing to impede Watkins progress.

Sign a reasonable 2 year deal that they can cut Springs and take a minimal cap hit if needed. Have Springs and Watkins compete for the starting FS spot. Then you draft worry about drafting an O-Lineman or a LB on the first day and have less worry about drafting a defensive back.

You know Rich the only issue with this idea is you are assuming that Springs is like Troy Vincent was and just looking for a team to play for. I think Springs will have no problem getting a 3 year deal for about $9-$10 million with about $4 million in SB. Springs is still a productive player and with all the money that teams have he is a quality plug in for a couple of seasons. With all of thier problems the Titans could use him, San Fran,Bucs,Bills,....

My point, and you make some good ones, is that Spring still has a little more Spring (no pun) in his step and he will have a number of teams bid for him tha settle for a team just taking him.

what makes you think that a 32 or 33 ry old who has never been a FS and has been injury plagued would be better than watkins?

if you want to sign a guy that is expendable if watkins is playing well, sign an FS. dont get a guy who will need to learn a new position

We actually tried to re-sign him 2 years ago when he was up for FA, but he choose the money and went to Minn. The players here love him and he knows the system. I'm not saying its a good idea or that I approve of it.......just sayin ya know?

As for Springs......well i love the guy and he plays at a high level when he is healthy. The key word being "healthy." Springs has missed way too many games for us to be paying him what we would have to in the upcoming seasons, so I would understand if we release him if he doesnt restructure.

Just because you move Henry to FS doens't mean you have to play him there. Personally I'd like to draft a CB at 22 to start for Henry. That allows us to move Henry where ever best suited. I don't care if it's starting FS, backup FS, #3 CB, #4CB or whereever. At least we are covered if someone gets hurt or Watkins can't prove he is worth starting.

He was your best corner last year when he was there and not sitting the bench injured.

I know he was out some... but he still provided good play for you guys when he was in.

Funny how suddenly he isn't any good since it looks like you can't afford him if you want to sign anyone else.:laugh2:

Ahhh... the joys of being 2 million over the cap.

Commanders are about 4M under the cap already. Just an FYI for folks around these parts.

Springs has played great football when healthy and if he is released it will be by his own doing in my opinion.
