Wow,

My journey since September.

I was going from note 4 to note 7

I went through these phone from sent to nov.

Note 4
Note 7 (recall)
Note 7 new replacement (recall)
Google Pixel XL (phone was sooooo fast... silky smooth but it just didn't do basic things)
Galaxy 5

.... back to my Note 4

The reason for my story.

I will give Samsung a chance to make good,

They may release Samsung Galaxy Note 8 early next year (January)... or at least hopefully first quarter.

What basic things did the Pixel not do for you?

I thought about upgrading this year even though I am still pretty happy with my Note 4 performance. IF I did upgrade it was going to be for a note 7. That fell through do to the issues they had. After that I decided to stay with the note 4...however I will admit that the LG V20 held some interest to me as it seems to one of the only larger quality phones where you can still take the cover off and get the micro SD AND battery changed by yourself.

But like you...I will probably just go ahead and wait on the new Samsung....besides, like I said, the note 4 I have still runs smooth as the day I got it without any problems with any apps.

Yeah I still have my note 2 and that was still going strong.
I went to note 4 for the advanced gogo juice :)

I will tell you that the note 7 was real nice.... neither of mine experienced heat issues or anything.

I didn't notice a slight lag in navigation. I'm thinking it was gradually getting worse. Not sure.

I hope note 8 is all good.

I'm a Note 4 owner also. I love it. It was a huge upgrade to my previous Android (a Moto G). One of my work colleagues has a Note 7 and has not had the problems with the phone catching on fire. I'm still not upgrading to the 7 just in case. Plus I'm really happy with the 4.

I heard an NPR radio show about the problems of batteries getting hot and catching fire. It's all related to making devices so small. They have to pack a lot of energy in a small space and that's asking for trouble. The problem is likely to surface in other devices, in phones, tablets, and laptops. IMO we're better off getting away from the "smaller is better" movement. I'm fine with the size of the Note 4, and I also have an older laptop (a Lenovo) that I bought in 2012 that's thicker than today's super thin models. I'm fine with that. If going ultra thin is compromising safety, it's not worth it in my book. Just allow devices to be a little thicker.

It will be interesting to see what Samsung does with the Note 8. I want them to keep this series going because I really like it. I like having a smartphone that has a built-in stylus. My biggest complaint when I moved from a Palm phone to an Android was no stylus and I had to rely on my fat fingers to type stuff in.

I think Samsung will roll out a note 8 but I think it will be later 2nd qtr early 3rd . why to put distance from the note 7 debacle. I was looking at the V20 but the colors were off. Main reason I was looking at the Asus and axom is no ATT next.

Note 7 is really not an option... to buy or keep.
They are sending updates that reduce the battery charging to 40% and then to 10%.
So the Note 7 is a wrap.

You are right. I have spoken to many and they said same. Very tight package and heat just too much. Confined.
I still applaud the effort .... risk they took,

I am reading and hoping its sooner and not later.
The sooner they officially launch a good phone then people can forget about Windows Vista and think about how great Windows 7 was ;)

Laptops are a different situation though as they have gotten smaller due to a variety of reasons. For example, most 2012 laptops had DVD drives in them which added to case size requirements. Most current laptops no longer offer a built-in DVD drive. Most of the CPUs/processors that have been released in the last few years have focused more on lower power consumption than speed increases as the CPU is rarely the bottleneck these days for laptop performance unless you have a bottom level CPU. Another change is that more and more laptops are making SSD (solid state drives) their standard storage drive instead of the older spinning drives (HDD). Because SSDs have no moving parts, they generate less heat than traditional HDDs.

The main laptops that still have problems now are the ones with discrete (dedicated) GPUs (graphics processors) in them such as gaming laptops. However, that's only when they are pushed heavily by graphically intense applications such as games. Most laptops with discrete GPUs also have integrated GPUs, usually Intel-based, that use much less power. In those laptops, the discrete GPU only kicks in for games and video intensive applications. The exception is nVidia's G-Sync system, but that's another discussion. That said, most laptops will actually shut down if their CPU or GPU temperatures get too high.

Ventilation and/or distribution of heat is important, especially in confined spaces. Of course, the smaller the device, the better off the manufacturer is when focusing on heat reduction rather than ventilation or distribution, which is probably where Samsung's design was flawed.

Samsung better come up with something trustworthy and impressive after their Note7 failures. Not just a rather meaningless upgrade like it was from S6 to S7.

Note 4 is the best phone mentioned in this thread. By a wide margin. In fact, it's still the overall best performing 'Droid' to date.

I do not know why...

Maybe because the Note 5 was not well received due to lack of battery access and the big killer no MicroSD support, so the Samsung I-Note5.
