How would the New York Giants have done if wide receiver Plaxico Burress didn't Cheddar Bob himself?
That question has been debated over and over again, picked apart from every angle and has seen opinions come in from all over the country. No one has been immune to pondering it at least once, including soon-to-be free agent running back Brandon Jacobs.
"If we have Plax on our team, we go 15-1 and we win the Super Bowl," Jacobs said yesterday. "I'm not afraid to say that and I'll say it to anybody on any team."
I'm not sure the Giants would have gone 15-1, but I am rather confident that they would have repeated as Super Bowl champions. After all, they did beat both the Pittsburgh Steelers and Arizona Cardinals earlier this season, as well as the Baltimore Ravens and Philadelphia Eagles.
Unfortunately, the bottom line is that they didn't go 15-1 and won't win the Super Bowl. They were unable to adapt without their star wideout, and younger players were unable to step up. Their offense became simple and easy to gameplan for, while the stress of being without No.1 17 just wore them down.
So how will the Giants fare if he's not with the team next year? Well, most fans and nearly all of the players are not interested in finding out.
"No question, if I'm there I need 17 back on that roster," Jacobs added.
Regardless of who's in blue next year, they're all going to need 17 back. If not, this potential dynasty could turn into nothing more than an extremely entertaining hiccup that ended abruptly with a loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.
