When Johnson was suspended by the NFL, commissioner Roger Goodell left open the possibility of the suspension being reduced to six games for good behavior.
That possibility likely became small after Johnson was pulled over for driving while impaired in June. Although the charges were dropped, the Bears released him three days after the incident.
Colton said there is a chance the suspension could still get reduced. Johnson would have to apply for early reinstatement and have it approved by Goodell.
Johnson, 25, a second-round draft pick of the Bears out of Washington in 2004, is in this position after several off-the-field incidents.
It remains up in the air whether Johnson will be allowed to lift weights and attend meetings with the Cowboys during his suspension. According to NFL spokesman Greg Aiello, the terms of the suspension state Johnson can't practice or play games with the team. A final clarification might not come for a couple of days.
But the bottom line is the Cowboys have Johnson on the roster and can monitor his fitness level and have him ready to play when his suspension ends.
The Cowboys could have waited until after the bye week to sign Johnson and he could have played nine games with the team instead of eight.
Johnson has served two games of his eight-game suspension and would be eligible to return the week of Nov. 4, when the Cowboys play at Philadelphia.
But if he's on a team's roster, he must sit out that team's first eight games. Because the Cowboys have a bye the week before the Philadelphia game, Dallas will have played only seven games, so he will have to sit out Game No. 8 against the Eagles and be eligible to play the following week at the New York Giants.
