In all seriousness, the key to winning a SB is talent.

Yea, there is some degree of luck involved, but by and large the vast majority of the time the teams playing in the SuperBowl have the most talented rosters.

That is why drafting is so important, if you look at the teams that have won the SB over the last several years, they were built through the draft. This is not baseball, you cannot go out and buy a championship in the NFL (the Commanders have proved this).

So if the key to winning the SB is to have the most talent, and the way you get the most talent is through drafting, then it is not secret that the teams that draft well are the teams that make deep playoff runs.

Teams that don't draft well historically, like Oakland and even Dallas, don't make playoff runs. You want to know why we have only 1 single playoff win over the last 17 seasons................poor drafting.

I'm not sure about that. The past few Super Bowls have been won by underdog teams - the last three were won by the No. 6, No. 4 and No. 4 seeds respectively. Seems that the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds would arguably be more talented yet lost.

That's only partially the reason. The Seattle playoff game was lost (in my opinion) due to the inability to get a first down near the end of regulation. That's almost entirely circumstantial, not the result of poor drafting.

Poor drafting also isn't the reason that Crayton didn't run his route further with just seconds remaining in the 21-17 loss to the Giants (had he had, the Cowboys would most likely have won.)

You know the last Giants run was a fluke. It was a fluke b/c they were not a good team during the regular season: they had a negative point-differential and finished the season 9-7. That year, their defense was 27th in the league (29th vs. the pass; 19th against the Rush). They were 8th in the league in offense, but they were 32nd running the ball -- dead last.

Then they got hot, winning 2 big games in Atlanta and Green Bay. Just about ANY team can do that. Then they got luckier than a leprechaun with a horseshoe shoved up his -- with two fumbles by Williams -- one leading to the game winner in OT, after the 9ers defense holds the Giants offense.

Honestly, it was a run not unlike the 1988 Commanders (to prove I am not just being a homer).

I think the Giants are too rare of an example to use because of Eli. He's a rare QB because he runs either extremely hot or extremely cold. But when he gets hot he can be unstoppable against anybody for a stretch of time. Most QB's that get hot tend to lose their effectiveness if they play 3 games in a row against good defenses or the weather isn't very good. Eli can play great for 3+ games in a row, against good defenses in bad weather if he's on his game. Then he can look like the worst QB in the league shortly after.

I think for the normal team to 'luck' into the Super Bowl an easy schedule helps. Particularly if the division is weak. This is where I think the NFC East teams get a bum rap...the NFC East is by far the best division in football when you look at the records of the entire division throughout the past 10 years. Conversely, you take the Pats who play in one of the worst divisions of football, they can put forth a mediocre team and win the division each year, get HFA and make it to the Super Bowl.

I also think a new scheme can be a huge factor.

If you look at the Niners under Walsh, they more or less came out of nowhere with not a ton of talent outside of Montana (who I believe would not be Joe Montana if he was drafted by the Raiders and throwing it deep all of the time).

But Walsh had fully integrated the WCO. IIRC, Everson Walls once said that the first time they played the WCO it the defense was slipping and sliding all over the place and couldn't defend it.

The same could be said for the Read Option. If you really think about it...the Niners almost won the Super Bowl by going to their 2nd year QB (from Nevada) in the middle of the year. I don't think anybody would have seen Kaepernick going to the Super Bowl in his second year as a pro.

So if a team can develop a new scheme, it usually takes about a year for the rest of the league to figure out how to counter and if they can get some breaks, they can win a SB before the league figures it out.

I would add that a good pass rush can help win the big game...
