think we keep him as a reserve and let him compete for a starting spot next year?

From what I could tell, he played pretty well versus Carolina. I don't know how he played versus the Rams. Also, he gives us some versatility in that he can play Center. All in all, I think he would make a good reserve.

I wouldn't mind keeping him for a reasonable amount (i.e., cheaply).

Opinions?

We have had far worse utility OL,,, Lehr,, Walters,, come to mind.

I'd keep him around for depth purposes. I wouldn't pay him a whole lot, but I don't think anyone would at this point.

Its nice having young reserves that have actually started in the league.

I would definitely keep him as a backup.

He can fill in for both C and G. He has starting experience and extended playtime at each position.

With our lack of depth at both of those positions and LA getting older and Peterman being a big ?, his spot on this team is secure, IMO.

And it's still up in the air about whether or not he's better than Rivera. :bang2:

I think you definitely resign him. He's the only one that showed any real aggression this year, except LA's snapping on Kotex.

Gurode is definitely worth keeping. He reduced his mental mistakes this year and still is very capable physically. His level of play could dramatically improve over the next couple of years. If we can coax him into returning, we should definitely do so.

I also think our whole OL has been shortchanged by poor coaching over the last four years. We need to invest in bringing in the best OL coach that money could buy.

Not only do we keep him for depth @ center, I can seriously see him challenge for a guard spot. I'll eat the crow if I'm wrong, but I think he could be solid @ guard if given a shot. He made a BIG difference in the O-line play with his 2 games @ guard. He's been on the cusp of getting it right for the past year or two...I think he will do good at guard and would be a good insurance @ center (back-up only)

Those last couple of games he showed me a little. I think we should keep him and let him compete with Rivera. I'll tell you this, though .. if we let him go he'll get snapped up QUICK.

Didn't he start for us a RG last year and was so horrible most wanted him cut? That is why we signed Rivera. Keep Gurode for backup purposes only.

Rivera IS better, regardless of what he played like this year. I'm not saying that Gurode WILL win a starting job, but that was last year...actually 2 seasons ago now. I think he can play, just a little slow to catch on. You have to admit he was impressive those 2 games @ guard this year. An abberation? Maybe, but I say keep him and work him hard in TC. Hell, at least he keeps working on the plays he is on, unlike a guy wearing #73.

It was Gurode, not Rivera who blocked when JJ went off in 2004.
Again in 2005.

coincidence?

I say keep him. I liked his play at guard those last couple of games and I wasn't that impressed with Rivera by any means. Have Rivera take a pay cut and let Gurode compete for the starting guard spot. He's big, nasty and wants to show Parcells he's been worth the wait. I don't like him at center only because I don't think he reads the defense well enough to make the calls along the line. That could change with more play at center but it's not worth the risk. What I hate about Al Johnson is that he's too small and soft. Waddup with the guy Peterman? Is he still around? Any possibility of Jacob Rogers coming back from the surgery he had? I thought he would've been nice at tackle (if he could stay on the field).

He'll test the FA market. Then re-sign here for minimum $ or slightly more. He's a good backup. But honestly, after 4 years he should be much better. Remember, we took him over everyone's favorite C-G LeCharles Bentley.

I think Gurode is a keeper. The question I'd have is, in exactly what capacity? I think he played better than Rivera this season. So I'd give him a shot to battle it out for a starting position next season. He's got a lot of experience now, and I also think he finally 'gets it' now. He'll probably never be a pro bowler by any means, but I think he can end up being a starter, or still maintain being the 6th lineman in if we bring in a higher quality lineman to start somewhere.
