So, will our new Kicker shove-back on Larry Allen?

How is this for Irony: It was Larry Allen who got some publicity last season for taking our Kickers to task (shoving them, etc). Now it may be the kicking position that determines Larry Allen's fate in Dallas...

...If the Dolphins release Olindo Mare, then Dallas can go get him for much less than Vanderjagt or Vinatteri. Signing Mare for less would give the Cowboys more leaway to spend the extra dollars to keep Allen. But if the Cowboys end up going the more expensive route at Kicker then I suspect Allen is out of Dallas for sure.

This dynamic - which is purely based on salary-cap economics - is why I think the Cowboys have not made a move at kicker of with Allen. I believe the Cowboys have delayed because they are trying their best to keep Allen for at least one more season - which makes sense given the recent signings at Valley Ranch and a likely Super Bowl run this season.

Get Larry Allen in the playoffs on a good team and you'll see how valuable he can still really be. I think the Cowboys get that which is why they're trying hteir hardest to not break the bank on a Kicker. It's to keep larry Allen under the constraints of the cap. And while the Cossier signing looks like it's meant to replace Allen, it can also be seen as a push to create solid depth - to have a 3-man front at the Guard position (Allen, Rivera and Kossier) to "guard" (pun intended) against injuries.

Your thoughts?

why would our new kicker shove someone who wasn't on the team any longer?

I think we could sign an expensive kicker, and retain Larry Allen for 1 year anyway. It's only for 1 year, and most contracts are mostly backloaded anyway.
