I like Holland is taking snaps at center. That means that we will have no use for Proctor.

Training camp position previews: Offensive line
8:00 AM Fri, Jul 17, 2009 | Permalink | Yahoo! Buzz
Tim MacMahon/Blogger Bio | E-mail | News tips

The fifth in a 10-part series.

Roster locks: Flozell Adams, Kyle Kosier, Andre Gurode, Leonard Davis, Marc Colombo, Robert Brewster, Doug Free

Safe bets: Montrae Holland, Pat McQuistan

On the bubble: Cory Procter, Ryan Gibbons

Long shots: Travis Bright, Greg Isdaner, Michael Turkovich

What's worth watching: Despite three guys getting Pro Bowl recognition, this unit underachieved last season. It must do a better job of protecting Tony Romo and opening holes for the running backs in the second season under OL coach Hudson Houck.

It would certainly help if Kosier is completely healthy. He missed almost all of last season due to a broken foot that required surgery and worked out on the side during off-season practices. If he's less than 100 percent, Holland could challenge for the starting job at left guard.

LT Free and RT Brewster will have plenty of opportunity to show that they are guys who could end the Cowboys' disturbing trend of draft busts with offensive linemen. Starters Adams and Colombo probably won't participate in both sessions of two-a-days to prevent Alamodome turf wear and tear on their battle-scarred legs. This is probably Free's last chance to prove that he's capable of being Adams' successor as the protector of Romo's blind side. The coaches appear to have given up on McQuistan ever filling that role, moving him to guard for all of OTAs and minicamp.

Procter, in part because he'll earn $1.54 million if he makes the team, could be cut despite starting at left guard most of last season. The 6-4, 318-pound Gibbons, who spent last season on the practice squad, would be a much cheaper alternative if he can prove himself capable of backing up Gurode at center. Holland could also see time at center in an effort to make him more versatile and allow the coaches to keep one less offensive lineman on the 53-man roster.

Previous positions:
Quarterback
Running back
Wide receiver
Tight end

This is nuts! Get in the ice tub like last year!!! It just shows you what kind of depth we have. Training camp is where championships are built...timing, etc. How can we achieve that with our two tackles missing practice?? Camp freakin cupcake!!!

I would definitely disagree with that assessment.

I think McQuistan has already failed at tackle and looked bad in a move to guard last year.

There's little reason to keep him at this point over a younger player who might have upside.

Personally, I highly doubt that he sticks around this year.

Free and Brewster are locks? YIKES.

Yeah, I believe Brewster is a lock. I don't think we'll cut a third round pick after his first training camp.

Good Lord our O-Line depth looks awful. I know we all knew this but when you see it like that... yikes.

Can Nate Newton host a 4th and Long right now for linemen?

I thought the same thing but it would probably like watching paint dry.

Calm it down there grass hopper. Columbo is a vet and also has knee issues no need to wear him out before the season starts and he is definitely the last person I'm worried about not being tough enough

Colombo is one of my favorite players. I'm just saying that an extra practice in the A/C is not going to effect these guys during the season. Justin Tuck, Merriman, Osi....those are the problems there knees are going to feel in the season.

You see, now this really bothers me because one problem this team has is breaking down in December. Now I'm not opposed to these decisions becuae our OTs need to be spared a bit, but at the end of the day, they need to last a 20-game season if they want to win a Super Bowl. So it's really troubling ot me that we need to spare them this early with no real capable backups behind them should they not last anyways.

I agree. McQuistan's definitely on the bubble. If he had been able to step in at guard last year when we needed one desperately, then he'd be a safe bet. As is, he was a so-so tackle last year and is being tried at the position he couldn't handle last year (and played in college).

I had high hopes for him, but I think his athleticism is negated by his propensity to get himself out of position, and I see him ending up in Miami as a backup.

As much as I dislike Proctor, I would rather have him or even Gibbons over McQuistan. McQuistan is a waste.

My prediction for the o-linemen that make the team.

Flozell Adams
Kyle Kosier
Andre Gurode
Leonard Davis
Marc Colombo
Doug Free
Montrae Holland
Robert Brewster
Greg Isdaner

possiblly a waiver pu from someone else.

My prediction for 2010 draft.

We will draft offensive Linemen like we drafted linebackers this year.

I see the opposite. This will allow Brewster and Free more reps w/the starters. That is a good thing. It is better to find out NOW, if Free or Brewster can play. And that chemistry thing works both ways, the backups have to have chemistry w/the starters too, can only accomplish that via reps.

Columbo and Flo are old veterans so I have no problem with them saving wear and tear on their knees. But their still needs to be discipline for false starts. No doubt.

My prediction for 2010 draft.

We will draft offensive Linemen like we drafted linebackers this year.

Yupp. We need to replenish our O-line. Still wish we would have taken a flyer on Duke Robinson in the 5th. The upside outweighs his problems by a mile. Let's hope Brewster shows alot playing guard or RT.
