There have been 450 different men who have Head Coaches in the NFL. In recent years NFL teams have trended towards hiring guys who had never been a Head Coach in the NFL before. For 2010 there will only be 2 NFC Teams with new Head Coaches; the Commanders and the Seahawks. In the AFC, unless the Raiders suddenly fire Tom Cable there is only 1 team with a new Head Coach; the Bills.

All three of the new Head Coaches in 2010 are retreads. Mike Shanahan, Pete Carroll, and Chan Gailey.

Of the 450 men who have been Head Coaches only 58 of them ever achieved a 10 year or more career in the NFL. Led by "Papa Bear" George Halas who coached for 40 years.

Of those 58 who have had 10 years or more in the NFL as Head Coaches, 9 of them have Dallas Cowboys roots of some kind or another. They are; Tom Landry, Dan Reeves, Bill Parcells, Mike Ditka, Norv Turner, Dave Wannstedt, Dick Nolan, Forrest Gregg, and Wade Phillips.

Jimmy Johnson missed joining that group by 1 year. Then again, so did Bruce Coslett. As near as I can guess 27 of the 450 Head Coaches have some form of tie to the Cowboys as a player, Assistant Coach, or time as a Head Coach.

The NFC East has by far the most NFL Head Coaching Experience in the NFL.

Mike Shanahan...16 years
Tom Coughlin...14 years
Andy Reid...11 years
Wade Phillips...10 years

Mike Shanahan and Jeff Fisher of the Titans both will notch year #17 in 2010.

143 men have only had 1 year as an NFL Head Coach. 7 of those 143 will make it to 2 years in 2010. They are...

Steve Spagnuolo, Rams
Jim Schwartz, Lions
Raheem Morris, Buccaneers
Rex Ryan, Jets
Jim Caldwell, Colts
Todd Halley, Chiefs
Josh McDaniel, Broncos

I like those stats. And another stat I like is that every single Dallas Cowboy head coach that has won a playoff game as our coach has won a Super Bowl as our head coach (you can do it Wade)! :)

I wonder how many HCs had 10 or more years with the same team. Very few would be my guess. Just a few off the top of my head:

George Halas
Tom Landry
Don Shula
Paul Brown
Chuck Noll
Curley Lambeau
Dan Reeves
Steve Owen
Bud Grant
Mike Shanahan
Jeff Fisher
Bill Cowher
Weeb Eubank
Hank Stram
Marv Levy
Joe Gibbs

I'm probably missing a few.

Has Belichick been with the Pats for 10 years now? I think he has.

Interesting post! Especially all of the Cowboys roots.

How do you see Shanahan working out in Washington, Hos? I see: "flames."

28 Head Coaches never won a game. 5 of those did coach to a tie. 23 lost every game they coached. Faye Abbott was the worst at 0-13 for the 1928 & 1929 Dayton Triangles.

Tom Landry is 3rd on the All time coaching wins list with 250 wins. Bill Belichick is the closest active Head Coach to him with 148 wins. Shanahan is right behind him at 146 wins. Jeff Fisher is 3rd at 136 wins.

If Marty Schottenheimer were to get another shot he would be closest to that mark. He has 200 wins. Dan Reeves at 190 is 2nd. Bill Parcells is 3rd at 172. Choosing guys who have coached within the last 5 years.

I think he will improve them a lot. I am not sure he will get them to the holy grail. Certainly not with Campbell at QB and I don't really put much stock in Clausen or Bradford either. In fact I think this Draft class is QB shy.

Its hard to rate a QB class now. 2004 was supposedly a strong class but there were questions about it at the time. You will not know for several years.

Forgive me for stating my opinion. I don't know what in the blue hell I was thinking.

Thats why I rarely say anything about how good a draft class is at the time. You will not know for years. Now last years class was weak in the first, and that was fairly well discussed at the time.

Dude, it was entirely about me dissing Jimmy Clausen. You know it, I know it, and there's nothing else to it. The proof is in your last statement which is a newer class than 2004, yet you already have an opinion on it.

Well since SUPPOSEDLY he is just kind of monitoring things from up high, one should not at all. But then that is why I said SUPPOSEDLY.

Don Shula led his teams to the post season 19 times in 33 years. Tom Landry is next with 18 times in 29 years.

Both men coaches in 36 post season games. That is 12 more than the next closest man.

Landry was 20-16 and Shula was 19-17. That stat would have been reversed if the Dolphins had won Super Bowl VI.

I was curious.

Tom Landry was the 203rd Head Coach in NFL History.

Bill Parcells the 323rd.

Wade Phillips the 336th.

Jimmy Johnson the 351st.

Barry Switzer the 376th.

Chan Gailey the 389th.

Dave Campo the 401st.
