Present, future #1s battle in weekend action… Figure pro scouts will be trooping to Kentucky tomorrow evening when the Wildcats host cross-state rival Louisville. The game features a head-to-head match-up between QBs Andre’ Woodson of Kentucky and Brian Brohm of Louisville, the top-two rated players at the position for the 2008 draft. Indeed, when all is said and done, both could be of the board within the top 5 picks this year. Game time is set for 7:30 PM on ESPN Classic. While the Cardinals-Wildcats match-up is all about the present, potentially the top two QBs at the 2011 draft will go head-to-head when true freshman Jimmy Clausen of Notre Dame and Michigan’s Ryan Mallett lead their respective teams onto the field tomorrow at 3:30 PM on ABC. And while the prize for the Irish and Wolverines has traditionally been a top spot in the national rankings, Saturday’s game is all about survival as both teams have floundered to 0-2 marks. Arguably, the best two games of the college football weekend, at least from the perspective of the 2008 draft, though, are Southern Cal at Nebraska and Boston College at Georgia Tech. Unfortunately both go at 8 PM Saturday evening with the Huskers and USC battling on ABC, while BC-GT will be on ESPN2, so keep the clickers handy. All four teams made the top 20 of our pre-season draft classes with the Trojans at #1, Boston College at #5, Georgia Tech at #15 and resurgent Nebraska at #19. Indeed, in hosting USC, which is also #1 in all the polls, the Huskers get the chance to prove they are back among college football's elite programs. Its also a chance for several Huskers to prove to pro scouts that they deserve early consideration at the 2008 draft. This will be the first big test, for example, for Nebraska QB Sam Keller, who sat out last all after transferring from Arizona State. The Huskers will also have CB Zach Bowman, who has all the measurables of a top cover corner, but who has suffered a devastating sequence of injuries the past year or so. Bowman, in fact, wasn't actually expected to play until mid-season after rupturing a patella this spring, after missing the 2006 season with a torn ACL.
Tough times for vet DL… Boston College DE Nick Larkin will miss at least four games as he recovers from arthroscopic surgery on his left knee, which he injured in last Saturday's victory over North Carolina State. Larkin reportedly had surgery earlier this week. and is optimistic about returning next month. Meanwhile, UCLA will be without half of its starting defensive line this weekend when the Bruins play Utah. DE Nikola Dragovic, for example, will sit out because of a concussion suffered in last week’s win over BYU. Dragovic will join DT Brigham Harwell on the sidelines; Harwell was lost for at least four weeks after suffering a torn medial collateral ligament in his left knee.
