My platoon was leaving a training area in Germany when we came to a sudden stop. I stick my head out of the door too what was going on and there were 3 or 4 apaches hovering to our right firing missiles down range......WAY COOL!!!!!!!!!!!

I took some pictures but I don't know if I still have them.

I saw one of those make an emergency landing when I was a kid. We were playing basketball at the school and he came right over our heads and landed on the baseball diamond.

The drive shaft to the back rotor had broken. Soldiers piled out with M-16s and took up positions. I thought it was a raid. A couple of Huey's were circling the field. Then one of them took off towards Ft. Bliss in El Paso, TX to get the replacement drive shaft. The other one landed nearby.

Some of the soldiers came over and played hoops with us and they let us go inside and sit in the pilot's seats. The whole town showed up. People fed the soldiers. One of the coolest things was when old Tom Farrell came by. Tom was in the Bataan Death March. Seeing those soldiers salute old Tom was cool as hell.

Calico, love the pics! Thanks for sharing. I have some great shots of a Air Show down here in Titusville, FL. They did a Vietnam re-enactment with two Huey's, two Cobra's, a Jet Ranger (Kiowa) and a Hughes 500 (Cayuse). Spelling may be off on those last two. Anyway, it was awesome to see them all in the sky at once dropping off troops and providing cover fire. I'll see if I can find them.

Rack, you're thinking of Screamin' Mimi from Riptide. I don't think it was a Chinook (double-blade) though.

I got to go up in a Black Hawk.

Got to help load some Black Hawks and Apaches that were headed to desert Storm.

Saw plenty of Chinooks while camped at the base of a mountian in Korea and a blackhawk clipped a power line towards the top of the mount. Which in turned caused a Fire and they loaded these huge baskets of water and the Chinooks dropped the water to put the fire out.

However I also learned to despise the Blackhawks as our barracks were right across from the Troop Clinic and behind the troop clinic was the helipad where the pilots would let the chopters run for about half an hour before leaving and half an hour after landing....which was usually in the middle of the night LOL.
