1. We offered Demarco Murray 4 years 24 million, 12 million guaranteed reports say to re-sign. .. The fourth draft slot last year was Amari Cooper: 4 years, 23.7 mil, 14,8 million guaranteed - and I guess this "slot" will be a little higher this year.

So you draft Elliott pay more than we would Demarco? - Jerry wants to pay a RB 4 yrs-24 mil-15 guaranteed about par or EE a little more than Demarco? .. Even though there is the "5th year option" team option which would be in Zeke's favor.. ?

Forget that. ..

Jerry smiles when he thinks of finding a great career player in Byron Jones. Why?

Byron Jones: 4-5 yrs, 8.6 million, 4.5 guaranteed
EE (or any 4th pick): 4-5 yrs, 25 mil about, 15 or 16 mil guaranteed.

Commit that much money guaranteed to a RB? .. Not Gurley or a generational type RB?

Jerry would love to trade down, down down ..

2. Much as I would like to get tons of picks, history shows we should trade "up" everything for premium to trade up to the low first round or another high second round pick ..

Will McClay we celebrate for no busts in Rounds 1 and 2 .. good job but

Dang looking over our 3rd day in the draft has been so poor last five years that we've got more value practically out of our UDFAs than our 4, 5, 6, 7 round picks all those years ... even since Will McClay has been running the draft. Kyle Wilber and a few others notwithstanding ..

Trade our 3rd and our high 4th rounder .. I hate to say it .. but do anything to get up into the 2nd round.

Our 3rd round picks OK not great last years ..(Chaz Green, T Williams, Wilcox. .. T Crawford perhaps the exception in 2012.)

I'd love to get more midround picks if we had the Commander's Scot Mccloughan at the helm who outdrafts about everyone .. the Steelers seem to find them, a few others. I would say the Seahawks seem to find them but it was Mccloughan who found them there .. I wish Jerry would hire a draft coordinator with a bit of a past like Mccloughan instead of players with a bit of a past ..

3. The 3 6th rounders comp we can't trade. These are almost the UDFAs-quality we don't want to lose to agents steering their UDFAs to other teams that might have better situations where they might make the team there versus us.

So trade everything up as far as we can that we can trade, and we still have the 3 comp picks in the 6th round to pick up our "pet cats" ..

3. Watch: Our consecutive 6th comp picks will be consecutive quarterbacks .. he he he

No kidding Erod?

This scares me that I wrote this ..

I used to spend all afternoon playing guitar in Blackie's office at the Times Herald, just picking licks (I was copyboy at night at the Associated Press, 1975-1979 or so). Our office at AP where I worked was a few feet away from the Times Herald. This was not one year but every year. It was a place me and a few guys could go to kind of chill out, and look at his awards .. And his pictures on the wall. Everyone liked him then .. No where else in the T Herald like this in those days because no one else had an office ha ha (see below ..)

Times Herald was a PMs paper so they all got there at 7 a.m. or earlier, then went home at 4 or so. .. The Associated Press back then just adjacent to the T Herald was 24 hours, but I would get there and work from about 5 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Another dude was as good a guitar picker and after all it was the 70s, and at night we would look around Blackie's office. Everyone revered Blackie back then .. We would jam on Allman Brothers with Blackie's awards looking down at us ..

One remembers his "Scattershooting" and his "2 Cents Worth" (did I get that right .. bullet points I think they made into a book ..)

Jim Lehrer as you know from the McNeil-Lehrer report on PBS for so many years, in those days, hard to believe he did not even have an office, he was managing editor of the Times Herald in those days .. Jim Lehrer's desk was out front and he was nice energetic guy ..

But Blackie had the big office . Jim was a big boss but he wasn't as big as Blackie .

Thinking of Blackie at the FW Press.

Sad to think I hadn't looked up to see if Blackie was on twitter, fbook etc.

The only guy with his own office at the Times Herald. Blackie

Blackie's one award he was proud of: he had one photo framed on his wall. It was "Welcome Blackie Sherrod to Midland TX" and it was on the Holiday Inn marquee you remember it was the magnetic letters they used to put on the big Holiday Inn signs back then and it would always catch your attention, Blackie's hand around his wife's shoulder and above them the marquee above. It was very charming ..

Blackie running the FW Press with every great sportswriter Jenkins etc. you've ever known and Blackie not giving them a new pencil until they had worn their eraser on their pencil out.

Blackie going down the day of Cowboy's draft dear lord wouldn't you hate that? sigh . .. Blackie to be sure was following it.

This is the worst possible situation: you die just before the Cowboys' draft. Like a day before. .. You will never know what happened.

Blackie wasn't on radio or TV much. He didn't want to be. .. I think when Skip Bayless gained ascendancy here and sold papers, Blackie was completely sad at the personal attacks. Just my opinion. .. Blackie was both a co-worker and a competitor for the daily column with Skip.

He was very astute, very funny, very original, but not a hint of unkindness in him. I imagine him covering the very early Rangers days with Ted Williams and Ted used to come up and drink beer with Blackie, Randy Galloway etc. in the press box after games because there was no place else to go in Arlington TX in those days. I choose to think it was Ted that wanted to hoist a few with Blackie even more than Blackie wanted to drink a beer with Ted. "Hey Ted, gotta go .." ha ha ..

Wonderful man I did not know, even though he would have been mad at me as I looked around and rifled through his office at the old Times Herald ha ha .. Maybe I stole a pencil ha ha ..

His "2 cents worth" I think are in a book somewhere, or they should be .

I hate this because Blackie wanted to watch the draft, as much as I can gather ..

Sure. Zeke won't be in his thirties when he finishes this contract (heck, he'll be younger than Murray was after 2014), and hasn't been worked the way Murray was in 2014. We didn't pay Murray because he was old and there was a good chance he was broken down. And if you watched him last year, he sure did look broken down (yeah, bad situation, etc., but he really didn't look like the same guy).

History shows no such thing. History of the draft clearly shows that trading down is a much better strategy than trading up.

Blackie the few times I saw him used to saunder (is that a word) across the newsroom like a bear. A slight grin on.

His "2 Cents Worth" were the best reading in any newspaper column.... Wisdom there without any mean words or thoughts ..

Someone will pull them up and find they were slightly off-color given today's world. Off-color given his not unkindly but funny thoughts about groups. But not off-color given the daily TMZ world attacks on individuals - if you are like me the off-color is the individual attacks on celebrities but when you speak bad of any mass movement tiny or large dear lord the insult is like a bullet if you are among those 100 million... .. "I can't take it .."

Blackie did not attack individuals .

Blackie never went on radio I don't think here ever, maybe in the 90s with the Ticket quite early on perhaps it will be on their podcast today or tomorrow .. It's been a long time ago since Blackie wanted to be in the public.

When I worked at the AP in 1975, before that a lot and even until the early 80s it was amazing: even the high school games in Port Arthur were written by college students, or even HS students on deadline, with poetry as if they were Grantland Rice and I looked at their newspapers just a few years ago. Even the 100 word story would be poetic. The big story in the Beaumont paper would be, always like: "A forboding night, rain expected, as if the Lincoln team were at the hangman's noose. Thunder and lightning this night hoped to chase the dreams of the spirits of the PA Lincoln fans as many left the stadium .. The game was not postponed after crackling of lightning .. After close losses, anyone would wonder if the team, with injuries to starting QB Mike Ryan, could hope to win. Jim Jones the backup took the squad down the field to score against Port Arthur Jefferson. But the worst was yet to come .." (that was the lead ..) PS Lincoln won that night ..

I know it seems dumb, but no one in those days knew who the QB was or anything. A Saturday morning newspaper read, let's say in a little town in East Texas where you didn't know what PA Lincoln or PA Jefferson was .. became a story .. Try to find a 100- or 200-word story like that on the back pages of any daily/weekly paper, if they still exist down in SE Texas .. Boys and girls that was a long time ago, but it was fun ..

Sorry a few too many Spatens today. RIP is a bad thing to say against anyone who loved living. I don't necessarily want to rest in peace. But anyway hale and best wishes to you B Sherrod.
