Zoners,

Perhaps some of you have been thinking or reading about the possibility of the Cowboys trading their 1st round pick (#4). I spent a little time with the draft order and draft value chart and have come-up with 13 hypothetical trades. In order to ensure that the trades are plausible, they all have a net point value of < +/- 10 pts. I tried to limit trades to just the #4 pick, but in many cases I had to add a player to make the trade work.

Pick, Team, Pts (+/-)<--this is the difference Dallas has to make-up in a trade-up (+) or receives in a trade-back (-) of the 1st round picks.

#1, TEN. 3,000 (+ 1200). Dallas' entire trade-able draft is approx 2,720 pts, so this one is out of reach.

#2, CLE, 2,600 (+800). Dal gives #4, #34, #67 & #192. Dal gets #2 & #179. (-2 players)

#3 SD, 2,200 (+400). Dal gives #4, #34 & #102. Dal gets #3 & #66. (-1)

#5 JAX, 1,700 (-100). Dal gives #4. Dal gets #5, #104 & #184. (+2)

#6 BAL, 1,600 (-200) Dal gives #4 & #102. Dal gets #6, #70, #144 & #185. (+2)

#7 SF, 1,500 (-300). Dal gives #4. Dal gets #7, #68, #145 & #183. (+3)

#8 MIA, 1,400 (-400). Dal gives #4 & #102. Dal gets #8, #42 & #189. (+1)

#9 TB, 1,350 (-450). Dal gives #4 & #102. Dal gets #9, #39 & #148. (+1)

#10 NYG, 1,300 (-500). Dal gives #4. Dal gets #10 & #40. (+1)

#11 CHI, 1,250 (-550). Dal gives #4 & #192. Dal gets #11, #41 & #107. (+1)

#12 NO, 1,200 (-600). Dal gives #4 & #102. Dal gets #12, #47, #78 & #113. (+2)

#13 PHI, Philadelphia's entire trade-able draft isn't enough to enable them to move-up to #4. (Ha-Ha).

#14 OAK, 1,100 (-700). Dal gives #4. Dal gets #14, #44, #75 & #154 (+3)

#15 LAR, 1,050 (-750). Dal gives #4. Dal gets #15, #43, #76 & #111 (+3)

Enjoy....

well Dallas could trade with Tenn for their #1
Dallas gives their 2016 #1
2017 #1
2017 #2
these trade values are not cut in stone
today they are the starting point of negotiations.

thanks for this

Just some added thoughts:

The first three picks are 400 pts apiece between them! That's the equivalent of a 2nd rounder (#50) for each step-up.

Starting at #4 back through #8, the difference drops to 100 points, a high 4th rounder.

Despite the point similarities, I find the scenarios to vary considerably. Compare #6 / #7, or #8 / #9 or #14 / #15 (the LA Rams?).

The simplest one is with the Giants. Move back 6 spots and pick-up a 2nd rounder.

The Mia & TB ones involve trading our 4th for their 2nd, plus picking up a 5th or a 6th.

Move back 3 spots w/ SF and pick-up their 3rd, 5th & 6th!

With CHI, we'd be trading our 6th for their 2nd & 4th!

With NO, swap 1sts & 4ths and add their 2nd & 3rd!

With the last 2 (Raiders & Rams), since we'd be dropping so far back, we'd get a 1st, 2nd, 3rd and either a 4th or 5th.

Number 1,2 and three picks would require both first and second round pick to move too. But the 4th pick would only require 1 and third until you drop to the #8 with dolphins?

If we trade down past the 7th pick there is a real value pick coming back. To pick up an extra pick around 40 to move 4 or 5 spots would be huge.

#13 made me LOL!

Our entire draft isn't worth the 1st overall pick? Going from 4 to 1? In a year like this?

That shows you how absolutely worthless that trade chart is.

We only have 5 trade-able picks going in. We have no 5th, nor 7th.

Keep in mind that the majority of draft pick trades are simple two-for-one deals, and only a fraction involve more than one pick going to each team. If teams are looking to trade up or down, they usually have a purpose in mind and aren't going to quibble over a few points on a trade chart to get the deal done.

Good point..........plus the instigator of the trade usually has to pay a premium beyond just straight chart value.

Yeah, I know that but if I'm the Titans and a team is asking me to drop down 3 spots to 4 for a 2,3,4 and 6...I think I'm doing it. They'd be fools not to. They don't need the franchise QB and there isn't a standout talent in this draft class.

If you just acknowledge that each draft class is not the same, some are weaker than others, then you have to conclude that trade chart is very flawed because it values each pick the same every year.

It doesn't know the strength of the draft. It doesn't know the state of your team and what prospect is there that you are trading for. To rely solely on that chart is foolish, IMO. I wouldn't even look at it if I were a GM.

I am not trading up under any circumstance.
And I damn sure am not giving up my top of the second round pick.
