I've been pretty anti-Buckner from the beginning but the more I read of him, the more he intrigues me a bit at the 4th pick or in a trade down.

Someone talk some sense into me.

Skip Bosa and Buckner at 4, this draft is loaded with DL talent and some 1st round type talent will almost assuredly be there in the 2nd. Give me Ramsey, Zeke in a trade down, or Jack in that order.

EDIT: That's assuming Wentz gets taken 2nd to CLE, otherwise Ramsey and Wentz are a toss up IMO. As you can tell I'm higher on Ramsey than most on this site.

I don't think he'd be a bad pick there even though he needs to work on staying low consistently. He's a good size-speed prospect with a lot of upside. I think Bosa is more ready-made for consistency and we would have to live with some growing pains with Buckner, but Buckner has a higher ceiling.

He definitely fills a need but I think there are only 3 players at pick 4 I would consider. Ramsey(if he's there grab him) Jack(if he checks out medically and Ramsey is gone) Tunsil (if Ramsey and Jack are gone just take the best player in the draft). One of those 3 will be there. Just do it.

I think Leon Lett sees some Leon Lett in his game.

DeForest Buckner DE Oregon

STRENGTHS
DeForest plays mostly in a 2-gap system. He has the size to impact in any style of defensive front, which is a good thing. He reminds me a lot of former Kansas City Chiefs DL Tyson Jackson who was the 3rd overall selection in the 2009 draft. Deforest has a lot of potential. He has the long arms and legs you look for in a pass rusher and the size to play more than one position on the defensive line. Deforest plays hard on every snap and looks like he has a very good work ethic. When he is allowed to shoot the gap and get into the backfield, he does a solid job of disrupting plays and causing confusion. Deforest should be a solid defensive lineman for the next level and given the time with better coaching he could turn himself into a more productive defensive lineman also.

CONCERNS
Deforest has very immature defensive lineman skills right now. He struggles to get off blocks consistently and when shooting the gap, it’s too easy to push him off balance because of his footwork. He needs to build up his leg strength and balance and must improve his hand strength to shed and make tackles. His football intelligence is lacking in identifying screens to his side. Additionally, down and distance tendencies of his opponent seem to be lacking from his repertoire. When Deforest is used on stunts, his arms move faster than his feet which is a coordination issue that will cause him problems with quickness to the play at the next level. Deforest is not double teamed very much and when it happens, he is not stout and is blown off the line sometimes five yards back. In conclusion, he has the talent and size, but he has a long way to go before he can take advantage of that talent and size for the next level.

TALENT BOARD ROUND: 2
I like Deforest’s potential to improve, but in the first round I’m expecting a more complete player and Deforest is not there at this point. I’m sure with better line coaching he can become more impacting because of his work ethic, so selecting him at some point in the draft, seems like a no brainer. I can see how some teams may want to draft him earlier than I suggest, but for me personally, I would wait for him to come to me and not me come to him. Selecting him earlier than I have him rated would not happen for me but selecting him later in the draft would be very smart. Remember Michael Strahan didn’t get selected until the 2nd round but then again, Michael dominated double teams and dominated his position. Deforest does not dominate his position or require double teams to take him out of a play.

He's plays very tall and doesn't get much leverage because of it. He gets washed out far too frequently against the run. He has motor issues. He isn't a natural pass rusher and because of the aforementioned issues, isn't a great run defender. He doesn't have a natural position because of his deficiencies. He's Shawn Oakman with a little more ability.

LDE on run downs and intirior rusher in pass downs. Not against it.

If we go that route, Im looking at post draft cuts for a vet 1 down pass rusher to play LDE on 3rd down

He seems like the ultimate boom or bust prospect. All the physical traits you look for, but also checks off all the boxes that keep coaches up at night. If he can be coached up a bit and learn to play with lower pad level, and really work on hand/foot work he probably makes a better 4-3 DE than Bosa in the long run. If he tries to play the same game he played in college he probably has a much shorter career than expected. I think Bosa makes more sense if we go DE and we want him to make an immediate impact. I could live with the pick of Buckner, but too much of a project for #4 overall in my opinion.

He isn't really very good at anything. If I am taking a guy at #4 I expect him to at least be very good, if not elite at something.

I think for his size he's a natural pass rusher. Doesn't look as smooth as some speed rushers but he uses hands well and doesn't win often using power. The power will come but I do think that translates well to nfl. Most guys his size use pure strength to win match ups while college get to the pros and rarely works. Not many men his size get 10 sacks. He is as much of a natural pass rusher as anyone his size.

I watched him in run game and the dude plays with very good gap discipline. Shows he at least has some football smarts. I also noticed he can play high from time to time but not enough to think it was a issue. On scheme fit this guy can literally play any position on the line.

I don't know what kind of character he has but if that checks off would do cartwheels if we landed him.

Looks like he is a 5 technique but look at that swim. Don't know anything about the guard he may be terrible. But big men don't often look that smooth with speed type moves. Also has great feet get his 3 steps in before making contact which is text book
