Something encouraging . . . . at least in my opinion

After watching the Steelers 3-4 defense, and after watching their LBs, I was actually impressed that in our first year of running the 3-4, or whatever version of it we ran, we had a top defensive ranking. (Number 10 I think.)

We really didn't have the personnel, especially the LBs, to run this defense the way BP wanted. On top of that, of the front 7, THREE of the starters/significant contributors were rookies (Spears, Ware, and Canty).

Not to jinx us for next year, but could you imagine if we were able to land 1-2 more stud LBs and a big NT to complement Fergy in 2006?

I think significant progress would be made, and I wouldn't be surprised to see a top 5 defense in Dallas this coming season. Perhaps even a truly "dominant" defense.

:hammer: I will go one further and say we had 9 new starters (Ware,Spears,Canty,Ferguson,James,Shanle,Fujita,Davis,Henry) and 6 1st time starters in this defense.

You look at the Steelgirls, and they have plenty of Vets, and their defensive scheme has been in place for years.

Unlike the Steelers, we lack another 3-4 OLB besides Ware who is a pass rushing threat. The concept of the 3-4 calls for a team to disguise it's 4th rusher, unlike a 4-3 when it's usually the down linemen who do the rushing. You can't hide who's coming when everyone knows its Ware

Give me one more playmaker opposite Ware, and I think this team would take a big jump. Give me a covergage safety to free up Roy Williams to roam more, and the defense becomes great.

Strengths:
Has excellent size...Is very fast and athletic...Has great instincts...Is very natural and does an excellent job in coverage...Does a nice job of filling against the run...Flies to the ball and makes plays sideline-to-sideline...Tremendous pass rusher and blitzer...Tough as nails and a true football player...Tenacious and has a great motor...Versatile player...Very productive and has a lot of experience.

Weaknesses:
Has some trouble shedding blocks...Is not the surest tackler...Was surrounded by a lot of talent which alleviated pressure and didn't allow the opposition to focus only on him...Can be too aggressive at times...Might not be quite as athletic as his computer numbers would lead you to believe...Needs to use his hands better.

Notes:
Father Rob played for the New York Giants...Saw some action at defensive end for the Buckeyes...Was overshadowed by A.J. Hawk but this guy is a top prospect in his own right...A great strongside linebacker who could also be an impact player in a 3-4 pass rushing role as well...One of the most underrated players in the draft.

Might be a good addition.

Be nice to have someone knock Mark Brunnell into retirement so we can hasten the Jason Campbell disaster in the Nation's Capital.

Would make an excellent 2nd round pick.

Totally agree... though, it doesn't seem as if he'll still be available when our 2nd pick rolls around.

You might be surprised. I believe we have pick #50. It could happen.

Man I really hope we can get Carpenter, very underrated player playing along A.J Hawk. he is a playmaker although i think we will have to trade up in the 2nd to get him. I really doubt he gets by the 49'ers in the 2nd round

BINGO.

Ware was a 3-4 linebacker in name only...basically, when he rushed the passer, he was a traditional 4-3 DE with his hand on the ground.

There wasn't even an attempt to diguise where the pass rusher was coming from OR what Ware was going to be doing on any given play.

It seems with all the critisicm of Parcells and Zimmer, this fact is often forgotten. I can't wait to see what happens when we do aquire someone who can do what Ware does, at least partially.

Zimmer probably will be the D-Coordinator in this place next year. If we aquirea pass rushing OLB opposite Ware, we will have a top 5 defense.

And beleive me, Ware, with an off-season of practice, conditioning, and film study, will beome a much more complete player. He will start making plays like he did in teh SEattle pre-season game.

If we get another OLB who can bring the heat, watch for Ware to drop off into zones, and coverage, and start making plays not just in the backfield, but all over.

Mark my words, this defense will be ALOT better next year.

Consider them marked. But I'll be extremely happy if this is the case.

That was my big beef with the defense this year. For all the creativity and aggressiveness it was supposed to show, I sure didn't see it.

I'd like to get Carpenter, but he's not going to be there for us in 2nd round; few mock drafts I've seen show him a mid first round-early 2nd pick. Could go higher now that Ahmad Brooks decided stay in school . Be interesting to see if any LBs shot up the draft board after combine.

BTW: Believe Ware shows significant improvement this season; he'll be more comfortable at new position & strength/conditioning in offseason will be big help. Adding (missing piece of the puzzle) in quality OLB to play opposite him & moving from vanilla 3-4 to more complex 3-4 scheme this year should pay big dividends. Do also think Fujita will show big improvement at OLB with 06 TC behind him. Wonder what expectations Parcells has for Fujita & Burnett (moving to ILB this year) this year?

Not only do we need another OLB who is a threat, but Ware must also improve greatly in playing off the ball and in coverage. The secret to the Pittsburgh pass rush is that it often looks like a 3 man rush, then the LBs can come from anywhere. To do that, Ware has to become an all-around LB who can play on two feet behind the LOS...then when he comes from outside, he'll be more effective.

Joey Porter doesn't just stand outside the OT and pass rush every freakin' play.

Greatest Offseason disappointment for me is that Ahmad Brooks decided to return to UVA...he could have been our stud at ILB.
