I don't see that happening...

#1 the money Wilfork will want will be crazy.

#2 Rat has made a name for himself at NT, it's the position he knows and has mastered. I can't see him wanting to move to 3-4 DE.

If push came to shove I think you'd see a 2nd tier 3-4 DE be brought in plus I would think that a 3-4 end (and NT) will be drafted next April.

Ya I like Gabe Watson and the 3-4 NT class is loaded next year.

We may actually get the player we thought we were drafting this year. Parcells was extremely high on Spears and thought he had some of the best movement and agility for a big man that he'd ever seen. But then he coached Spears to put on weight, which is Bill's style of 3-4, and Marcus hasn't been a real playmaker as a result. Or possibly.

All we know from his time at LSU is that he was a very active lineman who got great penetration and made a lot of plays behind the line of scrimmage. This year, Spears has dropped back down to right around his college weight and said he feels much better playing there. Could this portend the return of the slashing, gap-shooting Spears we fell in love with at LSU? We'll see. But I like the early returns of last night.

Spears knifed into the ball-carrier on one play against the Titans with such quickness & explosion that I thought 'til the play was over it had been Ratliff who made the tackle. Much to my surprise, it was Spears. That gives me hope. Because if Spears is finally at a level of fitness that allows him to fully utilize his natural athleticism, we may be in for a treat with his performance this year.

Remember, Parcells wanted to take Spears over Ware with our first 1st-rounder that year, and we were elated when he fell to our second. The Tuna thought that highly of him. The guy has talent. But I think playing overweight has limited his athleticism and disruptive qualities. Instead, he's been merely rock-solid against the run. But this year, we may see the disruptive player we thought we were getting. Wade Phillips is GOOD at using that kind of player in his 3-4. In fact, I think he prefers them.

Unlike Parcells' philosophy about 3-4 linemen, who he thinks need to be big behemoths who simply hold the point of attack and let the linebackers flow to the ball, Phillips actually lines his linemen up differently and prefers them to slash into the backfield creating penetration that allows the linebackers to flow to the ball. While Spears was rock solid in Parcells' scheme, I think he's a much more natural fit for Wade's defense.

And that's a good thing for Cowboys fans all over...

I don't see how we can let him walk. We invested a 1st in the guy and he is a big part of our 3-4.

Yup he's currently my 2nd round pet cat;)

I wouldn't be surprised with choice of a NT in round 2.

I also wouldn't be surprised to see an olineman in round 1 and round 3.

Depends on the terms of the contract. Depends if we are able to get a Vince Wilfork in the offseason. That would move Ratliff to DE. Many factors regarding Spears.

Spears has been solid, he's not a rush the passer end in the 3-4, not many are, nor should anyone expect alot of sacks from a 3-4 end, but if he has a solid season, I would resign him for a fair contract but if he think's he's getting Canty money from Dallas, he'll play elsewhere next year.

Didn't Spears have a knee injury 3-4 years ago? Many talk about him putting on weight being the factor of the "decline" in his play but personally I think he's just been getting back to full health.

Spears has been playing solid football as of late. I don't think we have any choice but to re-sign him if he has another great year. He may "pull a Canty" on us and demand a lucrative contract he doesn't really deserve but I definitely think we should make an effort to keep him in Big D. He's solid for what he does. Great against the run and perfect for a 3-4 DE. Yay or nay for Spears?
I think he'll have a really good year, and I hope we can resign him, but I'm really afraid he's going to hold out for more than he's worth. I can see Jerry franchising him.

He's always been better than fans understood. 3-4 DEs do not rack up stats. Canty's numbers weren't miles better than his and look at the contract he got. He does look great though.
Couldn't have put it better myself.
