From Wade's PC:

Did you sub Hatcher in more this game?
Played about 20 plays, but Spears had one of his best games. Both played quite a bit. Canty is strong. Ratliff is doing a good job. Spears had half a sack but hit the QB three times, has a tackle for a loss, those kinds of things. He hustled to the ball, played all out.

I thought I saw this...but nobody has mentioned it. Spears was a pretty disruptive force yesterday.

Maybe there is hope?

Sad that we have to heap praise on a 1st rounder who has .5 sack which was a gift to him because it was really Greg Ellis who should have gotten credit for the entire sack.

Plus he only really got credit for 1 QB pressure by the NFL.

He played ok against the run, but it was against a bunch of bums and a backup RB.

Trust me, I want him to play well every time he steps on the field. Why would anyone not want him to if they are Cowboys fans?

I saw him get good penetration and a TFL is just as good as a sack although its not as glamorous.

The way that QB pressures are determined is a mystery but i think its cute that youd rather believe a stat sheet that the head coach of our team.

Wade is lying, yes. Wade is a players coach, for him to criticize a guy after we won the game, wouldn't make much sense for a players coach.

The fact of the matter is that Spears hasn't lived up to his draft status. Maybe if he played in a 4-3, he'd be more effective, but he hasn't shown much as a Cowboy.

He played decently. I'm sorry you and I disagree on this David, but I would still expect one of our more touted first round picks to do something a little more than that, and do it a little sooner than his third year. When good games become a trend and not an exception, I'll laud his performance.

I agree with this.

What I don't understand on this board is why if you don't look at everything rosey and sunny all the time, you are seen badly.

Spears has played poorly for years, whats really wrong with saying that. Does it make you less of a Cowboy fan?!? Or are you more of a Cowboy fan for defending every guy with a star on his helmet?? Do you have some "agenda" if you aren't always a homer?!?!

Guess I missed the part of the Cowboy fan handbook where you have to blindly support a guy cause he is a Cowboy, and blindly defend him even when you are among other hardcore Cowboy fans who love the Cowboys also.

I don't believe in blindly supporting a guy, but I don't think Spears always gets a fair shake either.

Spears gets blasted for not racking up sacks even though guys who play his position don't tend to get that many. Spears also gets blasted a ton for his comments, even though they are pretty harmless and accurate.

For instance, I clearly remember people bashing him for his comments after the Giants game about it being a long season and not judging the defense off of one game. People were merciless about that. And now look, the defense is getting better, guys look more comfortable, and Spears is a big reason why teams are having a hard time running the ball.

That we even have a thread on this topic points to how huge a bust Spears is.

so if Spears plays against a depleted Oline, a backup rookie RB, and a QB with broken ribs, he can stuff the run, plus get .5 sacks! woooo

1st rounder

He's played well in every game so far. Some people think sacks are the only sign of a good player.

Those same people were asking what was wrong with Ware after 2 games.

We call them "idiots" where I'm from.

I'm not saying Spears is a stud...

But he's not a bust. He played well against a weak oline. 1/2 sack, 1 tfl, 1-3 pressures. Averaged out over the season, if he got 8 sacks, 16 stops for a loss, and 16 pressures this year, we'd be really happy.

What we do have is a solid run plugger who's not much of a pass rusher. That's far from a bust. Bust=does little or nothing. He's just not up to expectations and hopes.

I beg to differ, if you draft a guy in the first round and he ends up being average in one area and sub par everywhere else, that classifies as a bust.

If you're drafted in the first round and end up specializing, that's one thing, and even then, you generally have to be pretty good at what you specialize in.

Spears is not an intimidating run stuffer, and he gets no push. You can bet he's probably the best guy we've got at that position, but no one outside of Cowboy fans even know who the guy is. I wouldn't be surprised in the least, to see Tank playing at DE next season if/when Fergie comes back. Marcus, even with his disputed half sack last Sunday, has 3 sacks over 3 years! That's just plain pathetic.

Dude -- I would have expected something like this:

Spears sucks -- how many career sacks does he have? Count them ONE, TWO, THREE!
