One day into free agency, multiple teams have already expressed interest in Dallas Cowboys free agent defensive end Anthony Spencer.
The Cowboys were able to re-sign Spencer in late April last year to a one-year contract with a base salary of $1.25 million (the deal could have paid up to $3.5 million) after designating him as their franchise player in 2012 and 2013 and paying him a combined $19.4 million. Spencer, 31, played in only one game in 2013 before undergoing microfracture surgery on his left knee Oct. 1, 2013.
Spencer, who had a career-high 11 sacks in 2012, has spent all eight seasons with the Cowboys. He came on strong late last season, recording a team-high seven quarterback pressures and one sack in the Cowboys’ two playoff games.
The Cowboys and Spencer are a good fit. He likes it in Dallas. The Cowboys like him as a veteran locker room leader. But they won’t get into a bidding war for Spencer. They would prefer to re-sign him on another low-risk deal, but that seems unlikely with multiple teams already in play.
