Why are people so upset over big contracts and signing bonuses?

Ummm...that's supposed to happen, which is why the salary cap keeps increasing every year. You have a certain amount of money to spend, so spend it. I don't believe is paying huge money to guys who are old or unproven, but if you have guys who are relatively young starters in the league, and they will improve your team, then why not pay them? Why not overpay them? If that's what the market says, either you pay them, or someone else pays them. Most teams know how to avoid salary cap hell now.

I don't care how much we pay or to whom we pay it as long as the team is better and it pays off in the fall.

Gurode is certainly overpaid for his worth...so is Flozell Adams, but that's the market. We need a RT and a RG or we are in serious, serious trouble. You have to pay someone, and if the market says you overpay a bit, then you do it....you have the cap room....so get the players in here and get to work.

you dont spend just for the sake of spending...if the guy isnt worth the money, it comes back to haunt you at some point

the Niners just gave out the absolute worst contract I have ever seen for a player, the guy wasnt worth 1/3 of what they paid......eventually that kind of stupidity will bite you in the arse

Six months ago before the season started if I had told anyone the kind of deal Clements would get no one would believe me. Hell, I still can't believe it.

We will have an OL possibly minus two starters from this past season.......maybe Colombo, Rivera, and the already needed G.

So, Ok let's not spend the money.......I don't want to hear one complaint when our OL is leaking like a rusty water bucket next season.

CBZ if we start the season with guys that are worse than what we thought Colombo and Rivera were going to be last year then yes I would agree with you that we did a shatty job in the off-season. But not even being 1 day into free-agency I just can't get too worked up about it at this point. Colombo was nothing special last year... and Rivera? We know how bad he was. I don't think either would be that difficult to replace and I don't think we need to spend $49 mil on a guy to do it.

So how is it going to be acceptable? they were barely acceptable this season......words are cheep just like our OL w/be.

If they choose to bring along some young OLmen...fine, but I had better not hear any moaning and groaning about the OL or I'm bringing up this thread . :)

Agreed. We've already overpaid our won; no need to do it with others.

and every yr they see smart teams like New England and Pitsburgh win and compete, and see stupid franchise's like the Skins lose...yet what franchise do they want us to mimic? the Skins

we arnt even 24hrs into free agency, and the fickle folks are already crawling out of the woodwork saying we're a failure, the team is worse and that Jones is being stupid or cheap...

amazing

none of the guys signed today would have made THAT much difference, especially for the deals they were signing

I'll say it again, lock-up Columbo and get a guy for a reasonable salary to play RG, such as Cooper Carlisle, besides, he fits our line scheme more than Davis does

and spend a draft pick on a promising OG candidate for some competition there

Agree. Rivera has been about as big a bust as I can recall; even Wiley. But I think that makes Columbo that much more important to sign. It would cost us more to bring in a comparable tackle and then they would have to gel w/their teammates.

we need to re-sign Columbo because he's the best RT we can hope to get IMO

Who in the heck are you to call anyone fickle....you're the biggest whiner on this board when it comes to anyone or anything playing mediocre.....You craw out of the woodwork every Sunday whining about something.

David When you get your act together then maybe you have the right to call someone fickle.
