The NFL's top 101 players: No. 1 Walter Jones
Walter Jones may not be the most exciting player in the NFL -- he's an offensive tackle, for cryin' out loud -- but he is the most efficient. Instead of making big plays, he prevents them. Over and over and over, with the consistency of a fine timepiece.
The Seahawks' left tackle makes domination so routine, he barely is noticed. But we are not taking Jones for granted. On our list of the 101 best players in the NFL, he's No. 1.
Dolphins left tackle L.J. Shelton says he likes to watch Jones on tape. "He makes it look easy," Shelton says. "He was born to play left tackle. There are things he can do physically I just can't do. There are things he does linebackers probably can't do. He's in a class all his own."
Seahawks offensive coordinator Gil Haskell has worked with Hall of Fame tackles Anthony Munoz and Jackie Slater. In Jones, he sees a player who is bigger than both and as quick as Munoz, whom some regard as the finest left tackle ever.
Jones' presence makes Haskell a better game planner because the Seahawks never have to worry about giving their left tackle help from a running back or tight end in pass protection.
And Jones, who ranked seventh last year, isn't any less effective as a run blocker. In the NFC championship game, he drove Panthers defensive end Mike Rucker, an excellent player, about 20 yards downfield on one run. "He needs just a split second to get his hands on you, and then it's over," Rucker says.
Says Cardinals defensive end Bertrand Berry, "He has amazing strength."
The Seahawks know that well. That's why, by Haskell's recollection, the team went to Jones' side on 27 of their 28 goal-line runs last year. And Jones rarely disappointed them. Seahawks coaches gave him the highest possible grade for his performance in all but two of the team's 19 games. "He's the best," Bears defensive end Alex Brown says. "Bar none."

Quote:

2. Peyton Manning QB, Colts (1)
"He understands the game as well as anybody I've been around. It's 40 percent very good talent and 60 percent hard work and smarts with him."

--Tony Dungy, Colts coach
3. Tom Brady QB, Patriots (2)
"It's frustrating sometimes when you're playing against them because you make a mistake and he's going to get you. It's hard to create negative plays when he's in the game." -Nick Saban, Dolphins coach
4. LaDainian Tomlinson RB, Chargers (3)
"The first thing that stands out about L.T. is vision. He has instant recognition of what he should do. It's not thought out; it just happens." -A.J. Smith, Chargers general manager
5. Steve Smith WR, Panthers (NR)
"Steve is competitive and tough. The more he talks, the tougher he gets. Usually my game is to intimidate a guy like him. With him, it ain't happening."
--Shawn Springs, Commanders cornerback
6. Carson Palmer QB, Bengals (NR)
"He has everything you need in a great quarterback -a strong arm, accuracy, a great understanding of the game, leadership, a rapport with his receivers and poise in the pocket."
--Tony Dungy

"He is the best player in the game right now. He does a lot of the little things that bring us together. He's the quarterback on our defense. He leads us."

8. Dwight Freeney DE, Colts (24)
"He runs something like a 4.4, and he's strong. He takes such fast steps ... there is no windup for his moves. It happens like that. It's almost unfair."
--L.J. Shelton, Dolphins offensive tackle
9. Ed Reed S, Ravens (9)
"Ed Reed is probably the most instinctive playmaker back there. He makes plays on balls that most safeties can't make."
--Keenan McCardell, Chargers wide receiver

"Chad doesn't take a down off. You have to be conscious of where he is at all times. He's a hard worker, and he loves the game."

"I love to watch Shawne Merriman. I just love his mentality, his approach to the game -- it's, 'When the whistle blows, I have no friends.' "

"He can flat-out fly. That allows him to get a lot of space because you know he can run past you. And on top of that, he's a strong guy."
--Brian Dawkins, Eagles safety
18. Simeon Rice DE, Bucs (27)
"He's fast and explosive. He's been around the league a long time, so he can study and see your weakness and attack it."
--Travelle Wharton, Panthers offensive tackle

"He runs the best out route of anybody I've seen. He doesn't stutter his feet or give ground. He makes every route look the same. He's a true professional about his craft."
--Nathan Vasher

"You have to gear up for his strength, but when you do that, you also have to be ready for him to get on the edge. It's a fine line."

--Jon Jansen, Commanders offensive tackle

"I love to watch Gatesy. He knows how to use his size against a DB, and he knows how to use his speed and agility against linebackers."
--Randy McMichael, Dolphins tight end
25. Tiki Barber RB, Giants (44)
"He'll get 10 yards, then 8. Next thing you know, he's going to have a 31, a 24. Once he gets the momentum, he has that snowball deal going on."
--Marcus Washington, Commanders linebacker
26. Hines Ward WR, Steelers (36)

--Brian Dawkins
27. Ben Roethlisberger QB, Steelers (NR)

--Casey Wiegmann, Chiefs center
29. Terrell Owens WR, Cowboys (10)

--Jim Mora, Falcons coach

--Bertrand Berry, Cardinals defensive end
31. Edgerrin James RB, Cardinals (38)
"To me, Edgerrin is one of the only reasons Indy had their success. You can never really hurt him. He's shifty, so quick with his feet, and so patient."
--Ray Lewis

"Orlando is probably the most athletic tackle in the game. His feet are so light. You can't really beat him around the corner. It's a long day dealing with that."
--Bertrand Berry
33. Tony Gonzalez TE, Chiefs (16)
"The numbers he's posted as a receiver are remarkable, but what's overlooked is he's a good blocker. He was not a real good blocker early on, but he has become one."
--Marty Schottenheimer, Chargers coach
34. Brian Dawkins S, Eagles (32)
"Dawkins is so quick and so smart and so physical. It seems like he's always where he's supposed to be, and he's there before you expect him to be there."

"A very instinctive player who understands the whole scheme of things. His preparation is excellent. I can see it in his eyes. He cares about it. It means something to him."

"You definitely have to know where Roy is every play because if you're out of position and that guy hits you, it's not going to feel good."
--Chris Cooley
37. Daunte Culpepper QB, Dolphins (5)
"He can throw BBs, probably knock an apple off the top of a guy's head from 40 yards. You have a guy who can throw like that and scramble, it's a headache."
--Brian Dawkins
38. Larry Fitzgerald WR, Cardinals (NR)
"Larry is the best in the game right now at extending the envelope of the field. He has the ability to go down the field and go up. Contesting for the ball, he's phenomenal."

"Donovan is smart and accurate and a great athlete. He's a tremendous leader, and he has a unique feel for the game."
--Andy Reid, Eagles coach

"Most DTs they take out of the game in passing situations, but Shaun you keep in. He can pass rush, he can stuff the run, and he's just a load."
--Ruben Brown, Bears guard
45. Keith Bulluck OLB, Titans (47)
"He's very explosive, athletic and fast for as big as he is. He's a tall guy, but he plays a lot more compact. He gets so low and uses leverage so well."
--Randy McMichael
46. Anquan Boldin WR, Cardinals (NR)
"Anquan is probably the best in the league for run after catch. You look at some of his catch-and-carries since he came into the league ... they're a highlight tape."
--Dennis Green
47. Marvin Harrison WR, Colts (22)
"The main thing with Marvin is quickness in and out of his breaks. He also has soft hands where he'll catch anything and the ability to adjust his body and make tough catches."
--Tony Dungy
48. Tommie Harris DT, Bears (NR)
"He's almost like a linebacker in a defensive tackle's body. He moves effortlessly. He really understands football and has all the tools. He has the hunger to be the best."

"Ray is the most passionate player I've ever been around."

--Rex Hadnot
59. Adewale Ogunleye DE, Bears (76)

"When Shockey runs those pass routes, he's like a big receiver. He's a guy they want matching up on linebackers because he'll have the advantage most of the time."

"The one center I would still give props to now is Kevin Mawae. He's very quick, and he has great athleticism"
--Ray Lewis

"He's very athletic. I've never seen a player, let alone a tight end, catch the ball away from his body as well as Todd does."

"The biggest thing with him is energy. He loves to play the game. He plays so hard; he brings that intensity and energy to us. He's a physically tough guy."
--Tony Dungy
86. Ronde Barber CB, Bucs (NR)
"I can't stand to play against him because he's smart and makes plays. But you enjoy the way he plays. He does things the right way."
--Jake Delhomme
87. Chris McAlister CB, Ravens (33)
"McAlister is very physical. It's hard for a receiver to get off the line of scrimmage against him, so a lot of times teams don't throw his way much."
--Brian Griese, Bears quarterback
88. John Abraham DE, Falcons (NR)
"He has speed and suddenness. He has a knack for getting the football out when he gets to the quarterback. And he's a good kid who's fun to have around."
--Jim Mora

"He's a tough old country-boy type of guy. If you start paying attention to others, next thing you know Witten is coming across the middle getting first down after first down."
--Marcus Washington
92. Jake Delhomme QB, Panthers (NR)

--Charley Casserly
98. Jamal Williams NT, Chargers (NR)

Interesting to see that Marcus Washington is the guy that commented on Witten... seeing as how Washington laid Witten out in game 2 last season.

Yeah there's quite a discrepancy there... Merriman at 11 and Ware not even on the list.

I don't even care that Ware isn't on the list. I just don't think Merriman should be that high.

Merriman is starting to remind me a lot of Terrell Suggs. Very good player, pass rusher, but he was on everyone's radar his first couple of seasons, until it was figured out he can only reallly run forward.

I don't like that Shockey is graded higher than Witten.

Or Shawn Springs over Terrence Newman. Heck I don't like DeAngelo Hall rated over Newman. Hall must be the most overrated corner in the league.

Shawne Merriman at 11 is a joke. I don't get this love fest everyone's having with him.

"You definitely have to know where Roy is every play because if you're out of position and that guy hits you, it's not going to feel good."

This is too low for Roy.....who will knock your block off!

Sorry, but an offensive lineman should never be #1. It's just stupid.

Anthony Munoz was probably the greatest ever and even I'd never put him at #1.

Why do we take these lists so personally? Who cares where our players are ranked?

I completely disagree, I love that they put an O-lineman number 1. I definitely think TNew is way underrated though. He gets no respect for his physical/tackling ability.

I don't see how Merriman is too high, really.

If this list were produced before the season, I'd agree. But with the way he's started, he's worth the hype IMO. I don't care if we passed on him or not. Doesn't he already have like 4 sacks?

I'm not one to dwell (too much) on passing players. Especially Merriman. Why? I don't think he'd be that successful here. No way he'd be utilized like he is in San Diego. Not to discredit Merriman whatosever, but I think Ware would look a lot better numbers-wise in San Diego than he currently does here, too.

Glad to see four 'Boys on this list. Not sure I agree with where they're at with respect to their peers, but these lists can't be perfect. And they also can't -- and shouldn't -- appease each fanbase.
