Barry Church suffered a ruptured Achilles on Sept. 23 and missed the remainder of the season. He should be the starting safety when the team opens against the New York Giants. Both he and veteran Will Allen would likely be the starters.
Whomever starts, and whomever plays at safety, this unit desperately needs to contribute plays that has not see impactful production from this spot since Ken Hamlin's season in 2007.
"Our safety position has been lacking turnovers, interceptions, and plays like that since I've been here," Church said. "We have to produce. You can be good and you can be effective but if you want to be a difference-making safety, you have to have those stats. You have to have those interceptions. You have to force those fumbles. You have to force turnovers."
The other candidates include Allen, Church, Matt Johnson and J.J. Wilcox.
