The Cowboys clearly didn't think former Pro Bowl pass rusher DeMarcus Ware was worth $12.5 million in 2014 when he will be 32 years old and coming off the least productive season of his career, plus elbow surgery.
So the Cowboys cut him and he signed a three-year, $30 million contract with the Denver Broncos. It includes $13 million in 2014.
Clearly the Broncos have a different view of Ware than the team he played nine seasons for after being drafted in the first round in 2005.
“We’re obviously betting that he has a lot left,” coach John Fox said. “I think there is a lot of evidence of that. his character, being a captain, being a leader, playing a large part of that season with a pretty serious injury. We look at it a little bit more as a glass half full.”
Fox said the Broncos are comfortable with their gamble on Ware because their gamble on quarterback Peyton Manning has worked out. Manning signed with the Broncos in 2013 after neck surgery.
“No. 18, there was some risk. That turned out pretty good,” Fox said. “With DeMarcus, we saw enough evidence and knew what he dealt with a year ago to where we feel pretty good about the commitment. Fox said the Broncos also like the on-field relationship that could develop between Ware and Von Miller, the Broncos’ talented pass-rusher who has been slowed by personal problems off the field.
“Growing up in Texas, he’s always called and talked to DeMarcus and respected his opinion and looked up to him,” Fox said. “It will be good to get them no the same field together, the same locker room together. They’ve already had a relationship as competitors in the league; a strong admiration for DeMarcus from Von.”
