Weakside linebacker Bruce Carter liked the result from the Cowboys’ first game defensively, but he said the linebackers got worked over by play action and guard pulls from the Giants offense and quarterback Eli Manning.

“He’s able to read coverages real well,” Carter said Monday at Valley Ranch. “We tried to disguise stuff we were running. I thought he still did a great job. We just need to cover better and make sure guys are where they need to be.”

Manning threw for 450 yards and four touchdowns, posting a 102.3 quarterback rating Sunday night. He threw a 70-yard touchdown pass to Victor Cruz when the Cowboys weren’t ready on defense, and he also had a completion of 57 yards to Hakeem Nix. Ruben Randle also had a 26-yard reception as the Giants hit open slants all game.

“Take nothing away from him. We just need to work on our drops,” Carter said. “Couple times, we got sucked up on play action. We just need to hurry up and get out of there, out of the stack.”

Line reads also got the Cowboys, Carter said.

“Once you are able to pull or have a puller come a certain way and we’re reading it or keying it, we get sucked up and they’ll throw the ball right over our heads,” he said.

But at least Carter got his first career sack, taking Manning down in the third quarter, one play before Barry Church’s fumble recovery for a touchdown to put the Cowboys ahead 27-10.

“He was a lot stronger than what I thought,” Carter said of Manning. “I actually almost couldn’t get him down.”
