Offensive coordinator and line coach Bill Callahan said he hopes NFL observers see what Tyron Smith is doing.
“I’m hopeful the fans out there, and of course, the people that look at him as a Pro Bowl player really study him in depth. Because he has a lot of positiveness to his play, and I hope people realize that,” Callahan said. “For a young guy to flip over to that left side in his second year and do what he has done, again, up against some of the premier pass rushers in the NFL just speaks to his ability and his want-to.”
Smith has only one blemish – a holding call at Detroit as the Cowboys were trying to run clock and move closer for a field goal – in what is widely regarded as a stellar season for the former No. 9 pick. In 12 starts, he has allowed one sack and has three false starts. The Cowboys are averaging 5.8 yards per run to left end, most on the team, and 4.0 to left tackle, third-most.
“I’ve been fortunate enough to coach a few of them,” Callahan said of the Pro Bowl players he has coached. “I really think that he’s right up there. He posses all the skill, all the attributes that you look for in a franchise left tackle.”
