The heartbreaking 31-30 loss to the Lions may linger for a Cowboys team that was seemingly on the brink of a breakthrough but is now back into the familiar grips of mediocrity following a setback that typified many during the 8-8 stupor that has a strangle hold on this franchise.
Instead winning a third straight game, including a second straight road game for first time since 2009, and shows signs of life by moving to 5-3 on the season with a winnable game against a struggling Minnesota Vikings team up next at home, the Cowboys are back to 4-4 on the season.
They are 20-20 since 2011 and 108-108 since the start of the 2000 season.
The Cowboys remain in first place in a bad NFC East but they have yet to prove they are any different than in the past.
“Until we win games like this, when we have an opportunity to win, we’re going to be an average football team,” linebacker Sean Lee said. “We’re not going to be in the playoffs. Until we win these games, and don’t make these mistakes, we’re going to be 8-8 and we’re not going to be where we want to be. So we’ve got to make a decision: Are we going to execute at the most critical times and win these games when we have them? I don’t know. We have to do it if we want to be the team we want to be.”
Said owner Jerry Jones: It was just a huge win for them and they you know took the victory right out of our hands and they did it the way you have to do it with big plays and they did it at home and they did it in a way that will help their team. We’ll have to work to overcome this loss.”
