IRVING — Bruce Carter limped through the locker room in obvious pain. It took him 20 minutes just to put on a sock Tuesday morning, he said.
Carter expects to spend the next 10-14 days rehabbing, hoping to miss only this Sunday’s game against the Houston Texans.
“Hopefully it goes a lot faster than that. I want to get back out there,” he said.
Carter has a quadriceps strain, the same injury that kept DeMarcus Ware out three games last season.
“It’s just something about how your body responds to it,” Carter said. “Some guys are different so hopefully my recovery time will be lot faster than [Ware’s].”
Carter played 40 of 61 snaps against the Saints, making six tackles and defensing two passes, one of which led to an interception by Justin Durant. Owner Jerry Jones called it Carter’s best game, and Carter agreed, saying he graded out at an A-plus.
But Carter left the game early in the fourth quarter, pulling up on a 62-yard run by Khiry Robinson in the fourth quarter. Carter said he heard the quadriceps pop twice, sending him into a baseball slide.
“I felt like I got shot,” Carter said. “I was opening up about to catch him and then just, ‘Pow!’ out of nowhere.”
The Cowboys have not started the same three linebackers for any game this season. (They opened in the nickel against the Saints, with only two linebackers on the field.) The Cowboys have used five starting linebackers in four games, because of injuries.
Starting linebackers Durant and Rolando McClain previously had missed games with groin injuries, with both returning last week. Now, Carter is out.
“It’s part of football,” Carter said. “It happens around the league all the time. I just got to get my body back right, and I’ll be fine.”
