Cowboys notes: Romo dismisses December struggles

IRVING — Asked Friday if he had given any thought to his December narrative, Tony Romo quickly answered, “No.”

The Dallas Cowboys quarterback is 24-5 in November, but only 11-15 in December and 1-1 in regular-season games played in January.

Romo was asked four more questions about winning in December. His answers were longer, but the idea was the same: The Cowboys don’t care about anything but winning in Chicago on Monday night.

“I don’t think the football team cares about December,” Romo said. “They care about winning this game. You could put this game in October, January, whatever, and it’s going to feel the exact same to us. It’s just a matter of going out and winning.”

It is about winning, but lately the Cowboys haven’t gotten it done late in seasons. The past the past two seasons, when the Cowboys have controlled their destiny in their division and had a chance at the playoffs, they lost their final two games each time and missed the postseason.

“I think [the media] add the extra stuff [to] the winning. All that matters is getting the job done,” Romo said.

Sure he thinks about it. I don't believe he doesn't.

I don't think it bothers him though. I think he knows he needs to do better this month. Nobody would have to tell them that.

I've said it all along vs chokanista (my term) crowd; the team and QB feel the exact same pressure in an opening season road game vs the the defending Super Bowl and rival Giants as they do in a game 17 win and in game. It's comical that people think other wise. Once the game is on and team or player are in action, they don't stop and think about all the outside stuff that media and dork fans talk about all week.

I'm tired of hearing it, but I won't blame the media. It's time for this team to change the narrative themselves- dominate the month and go into the playoffs on a roll. Only than will the talk of December swoons go away.

We won the first three games in December last year, but lost the final two.

Agree. True athletes fear losing, and value winning above all.

Our Dec woes are due to the fact that we've not been very talented in the trenches. Dec and Jan are times when team can have more of an advantage by running the ball and controlling the clock. We haven't been very good in either of those departments. Our Oline is just now showing signs of life and our O plays been pretty easy to control because of JG's easy to read system. All teams have ever had to do was jam our WR's taking away shorter passes and daring us to go long because they know our line can't hold their blocks.

number of losses since 2009 when Tony Romo had a 100+ rating in a Dec-Jan game. (5-5)

5
combined number of losses since 2009 when PManning, Rodgers, Brees, Brady, Rivers, Ryan, Wilson, and Kaepernick had a 100+ rating in a Dec-Jan game. (64-5)

Since 2009, when one of those eight quarterbacks has a 100+ rating in a December or January game, their team wins 93% of the time. Across the league during that time, teams whose QB puts up a 100+ rating in a December or January game are 156-40. That means they win 80% of the time. When Romo has done it, Dallas is 5-5.

How do Romo's performances in the Dec-Jan losses compare to all other QB's performances in Dec-Jan losses since 2009? His pass rating is more than 30 points higher than the league average.
Romo:
216 of 312 for 2,382 yd 18 td 5 int 101.5

NFL:
6,421 of 11,284 for 71,172 yd 329 td 428 int 69.0

There is so very little to like about the media in general.

There is so little to like about the Cowboys when they play like they do the last 3 years.

Unable to control things on the field of play..

..unwilling to change what they do during games that might change the outcome..

..poor coaching decisions in critical times..

..it's certainly not all on Romo..

..but it really is now.

Does anybody have the defensive passer rating allowed over those Decembers? I'm going to go out on a limb here and say it's probably terrible.

Plz plz defense hold good for 1st two possessions , may be get a TO. And plz plz offense score at the earliest opportunity and then don't release the throttle. That will ensure we would come out with a victory. Both these defenses are not made for playing from behind. ( I'm meaning bears game)

Agree with the previous posters that the December collapses are due to the defense starting the offseason too early. If this team has turned a corner, we should expect the defense to put up a fight this year, even though the talent may be lacking.

I love stats like this, but at the same time, I hate them, because they just fire me up even more. Romo isn't the problem. Get the man some help.

Don't need the circus show. Tony needs to understand that he is responsible to play better in December. Looks to me that in 2013 he has played to not give away the turnovers. Is it not turnovers that have sealed the Cowboys fat in Dec. A smart and talented QB we have and if he is down deep serious about admitting his part the Boys are in good hands. Don't forget that Romo has amazing stats if you want to turn the picture to the left and again and again. Most 4th qtr comebacks ect The guy has top 10 alltime stats just needs to be winning the turnover battle because he has the ability to get multiple scores up without trying to fit it in too tight ala Favre.
