Right guard Brian Waters will undergo surgery on his torn triceps soon. Though he played only eight games this season and turns 37 years old in February, coach Jason Garrett said the Cowboys are "open" to having Waters back next season.
"I love the guy," Garrett said Monday. "I think he’s done so much for our football team. I think he played really well in a short-period of time without having an off-season and training camp. It’s not a surprise based on what he’s done throughout his career, but more than that, the kind of guy he is. He is a heck of a guy to have on your football team. He’s a warrior. He demonstrated that throughout his career in the short-period of time he was with us. He had a real positive impact and his demeanor and his temperament was contagious particularly for that offensive line group. We have so many young guys. Tyron Smith is young. Ron Leary is young. Travis Frederick is young. All these guys are young football players, and to have a veteran guy like that to kind of show them how to do it, it was really good. It was good for our team and hopefully that contagious nature continues in his absence.
"We certainly want him to be around as he’s on IR to continue to have that impact, and we’ll see how everything comes out with the surgery, but we’re certainly very open to having him back."
Waters andthe Cowboys had hoped to find a way he could return this season by delaying surgery, but doctors delivered the verdict that landed the 13-year veteran on injured reserve Saturday.
"In the end, it was a medical decision and based on the injury he had, like we talked about at the outset, the triceps injury of the three that he had in that ball game was the most significant one and he needs to have surgery on that," Garrett said. "We tested every possible scenario, every avenue to see if he could play, whether it’s bracing it up or whatever, but the nature of being an offensive lineman and not having use of your triceps, that’s what they do. Every snap, that’s what they do.
"He’s a tough guy. He wanted to play. We had some late-night conversations about finding a way to have him play. At the end of the day, it was a medical decision that said he’s not going to be able to do this."
