The Cowboys signed defensive tackle David Carter, released by the Cardinals after training camp, and added receiver Jamar Newsome to the practice squad after working out six players Tuesday.

To make room for Carter on the 53-man roster, they released defensive tackle Landon Cohen. To put Newsome on the practice squad, the Cowboys released 2012 draft pick Danny Coale.

Carter (6-5, 294) was released Aug. 30 by the Cardinals. He was their sixth-round pick in 2011 out of UCLA. He played in 32 games with 18 tackles, one sack, two pressures and a forced fumble. He started four games last year.

Newsome (6-1, 201) has played in eight games over two years, with Jacksonville in 2011 and Kansas City in 2012. He made two starts for the Chiefs last year. He has five career catches for 73 yards.

The other players who worked out Tuesday were cornerbacks Ryan Steed, Junior Mertile and Peyton Thompson and wide receiver Dwight Jones.

The Cowboys may not be through signing players. They remain thin at corner, with only four on the active roster, and starter Morris Claiborne is playing with a shoulder injury. He was in on only 37 snaps against Kansas City.
