The Cowboys signed former TCU guard Jeff Olson and former UTEP tackle James Nelson on Thursday for help on the offensive line in training camp, and perhaps to absorb snaps in Sunday's preseason opener.
The Cowboys were having to use David Arkin and Ronald Leary at guard on both the first- and second-team lines, and Leary on the third, also, in walk-through on Thursday. Starting guards Nate Livings and Mackenzy Bernadeau are both out with injuries.
The Cowboys have to play their first preseason game in three days, when they meet the Miami Dolphins in the Hall of Fame game in Canton, Ohio.
To make room for Olson and Nelson, the team released linebacker Cameron Sheffield and cornerback Devin Smith.
