The Cowboys are expected to leave for training camp on July 22 and will return from California for good before their second preseason game.
The Cowboys typically play their first two preseason games on the West Coast, while they have training camp at Oxnard, Calif., and then break camp when they come home for the third and fourth preseason games at home.
But this year, a concert at AT&T Stadium has the third preseason date booked, so the Cowboys are playing in Miami that weekend. It would be a lot of travel for the Cowboys to play at home in the second preseason weekend, go back to California for four days of practice, fly to Miami for a game and then come back to Texas.
Teams are allowed to start training camp 15 days before their first preseason game. The date of the Cowboys’ first preseason game is Thursday, Aug. 7, which means they could start camp Wednesday, July 23.
“Looking a few things with league rules to possibly get a uniform start date,” Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said. “The 15-day rule might not apply.”
