Jason Vega was a longshot to make even the practice squad after signing with the Cowboys so late. But he did that, earning a spot on the developmental roster on Sept. 2 despite not being signed until Aug. 21 and getting in only one preseason game.

Now, after six games on the practice squad, Vega will get a shot on the active roster. The Cowboys will call him up to provide depth at defensive end with Edgar Jones out and DeMarcus Ware doubtful for Sunday.

"I know some of our guys got banged up – DWare and Edgar’s been down a little bit -- so I knew it was a possibility," Vega said Friday of knowing that he might get the call. "I just wanted to wait until the end week before I actually decided that might be the case."

Vega had four tackles, including one for loss, in the final preseason game against Houston.

"I just looked at it as an opportunity, one that I definitely am grateful for now and I was grateful for then," Vega said. "I just wanted to get into the game and see what I could do and let fate take care of itself."

Vega spent two seasons in the CFL with Winnipeg before signing with the Patriots on Jan. 26. He lasted in New England until Aug. 13 when the Patriots released him. The former Northeastern standout now is getting an improbable NFL shot.
