Ernie Sims says the Cowboys’ defense has a “dog-type mentality,” so it’s not going to get discouraged.

But it does have to work on the details following its performance in the last two weeks, he said.

“It’s definitely frustrating; we’ve given up some points,” the veteran linebacker said. “But to be honest with you, the attitude of this defense – we’ve got a dog-type mentality on this defense. We come back out here on Wednesday, and we still fly to the ball. We’re hitting and saying we’re still fighting.

“And that’s the type of defense you want. That’s the type of defense you want to play for, and the coaches, they’re not backing down. The players, we’re not backing down. Things are going to turn around.”

What the Cowboys want to do next is take their fighting attitude to the details of playing the 4-3 defense. In some cases, the Cowboys still are not playing the scheme precisely correct.

“On certain plays, we just didn’t do what we had to do in details,” Sims said of the loss to Denver. “We didn’t drop to a certain area of the field – one yard outside of the hash. We didn’t do the details we had to do to beat that team.”

Sims admitted it’s easier said than done to simply bounce back and sharpen things up.

“Everybody is hurt. Emotionally. Mentally. And obviously, physically,” he said. “But you know, a lot of these guys have been doing this for a long time. We’re just going to get back to the basics and keep fighting.”

Sims said the best way to deal with frustration is in practice.

“Repetition, over and over again,” he said. “It starts with today. Keep doing the right things over and over again, and hopefully, in due time, we’ll start seeing results – i.e., wins.”
