The Cowboys are contractually bound to have a week of training camp in Frisco when their new headquarters is ready. But for coach Jason Garrett, part of the benefit of camp away from home is a chance for the players to bond.

“They’re together. They eat meals with each other. They get tape,” Garrett said. “Everything they do is kind of next to each other, and we think that’s a positive thing. You can create that same environment at home. I’ve been part of that as both a player and as a coach. So you just kind of figure it out. But that’s a really important piece of training camp. You better make sure that happens.”

Veteran cornerback Brandon Carr said the team is a family, and training camp is “like a family vacation for us, a bonding experience.”

The Cowboys will return to Oxnard next year, and they have an option for 2015. Oxnard wants to upgrade the training camp facilities the Cowboys use next to the Residence Inn River Ridge complex in hopes of keeping the team even after the facility in Frisco is ready.

A likely scenario is that the Cowboys hold two or three weeks of camp in Oxnard followed by one or two weeks at home. The team has held camp near the California coast on and off for 50 years because of the mild temperatures.
