The Cowboys came to Oxnard, Ca. for cool temperatures and to beat the Texas heat for training camp. Temperatures have been cooler than expected, hovering in the 50s and 60s at times in the past week.
But it's all about perspective for coach Jason Garrett, who said the Cowboys couldn't have asked for a better environment to get quality work done. He has worked in 100-degree weather and would take this every day.
"It’s certainly a good environment to practice in and that’s an age-old thing that’s been in football forever," Garrett said. "Do you want to practice these guys in 100, 110 degree heat every day or do you want to create an environment where they can maybe take more full advantage of the reps they get? Having been in both kind of environments, I know when you’re in the one environment where it’s really hot oftentimes there’s a lot more attention paid to the water jug behind the drill than the actual drill. Everyone’s just trying to get through it. Are we running after practice. Halfway through the practice it starts getting bad because we’re getting ready for the run. Are we doing blitz drill, let’s not make team drill quite as good. Whatever the examples are. We believe in trying to create an environment where you can go fast all the time. Southern California, it’s hard to beat the weather out there. I think the tempo of our practice has been really good. I think our guys are tired at the end of the day. We think that’s a good thing."
