Garrett said McClain and Spencer responded well to Sunday's game, should be ready for more

IRVING — Good news on the injury front for the Cowboys was that linebacker Rolando McClain and Anthony Spencer, who had limited roles against the Saints because of groin and knee issues, responded well to the action and should be ready for more against the Texans this weekend.
McClain missed the Rams game last week with a groin injury and it was initially feared that he might be out a couple of weeks.

But he managed to do some limited work on the practice field on Friday, giving them hope that he could play in the game. McClain only had two tackles playing primarily in the base offense against a Saints team that likes to spread you out but he held up physically in the game and had no setbacks. His role increased on passing downs when Bruce Carter went out with strained quad in the second half.

McClain’s presence will be doubly important against the Houston Texans and their run-oriented attack.

“We just worked him last week, and initially it was working in the walkthroughs,” coach Jason Garrett said.

“He couldn’t practice on Wednesday and Thursday, and then by Friday, having him move around in practice. We were hopeful that, coming out of Friday’s practice, we’d have a good feel for whether or not he could play – he practiced well. He felt fine on Saturday after he got that work, so we were pretty optimistic at that point, so the walkthrough preparation was really important for him. He’s a smart player – very instinctive, he picks things up quickly. I think that certainly helped in his ability to play in that game.”

Spencer got on the field against the Saints for the first time in the more than a year while recovering from microfracture knee surgery.
