Rookie safety J.J. Wilcox beat out Will Allen for a starting safety job, but Wilcox says he won’t forget how Allen helped get him there.
“He played a major role in where I am now,” Wilcox said Wednesday at Valley Ranch, a day after Allen’s release. “He helped me out a lot. So, that being said, I understand it’s a business. Still got to be productive. But he’s like a brother to me, and always will be. We’re going to stay connected.”
Wilcox said Allen, a 10-year veteran, helped him see things from a veterans’ point of view.
“Some stuff I didn’t see, he made me see it,” Wilcox said. “A lot of stuff that I might overlook, he sees. You know, I might take two steps that way when I can take just one step this way and eliminate a lot of stuff.”
Wilcox said the decision had him down.
“Kind of bothering me,” he said. “Yeah, it’s affecting me.”
