The Cowboys wish they had gotten Brian Waters signed sooner, but they are glad to have the offensive guard now. They signed Waters to a one-year deal worth up to $3 million, and Waters arrived at Valley Ranch on Wednesday to begin trying to shore up the Cowboys offensive line.
Cowboys coach Jason Garrett didn't rule out Waters for the season opener in four days, but Garrett agreed it will take Waters some time to get in football shape. Waters hasn't played since 2011.
"We talked to him throughout training camp, and we got a chance to see him work out at Valley Ranch here yesterday," Garrett said. "It was a hot day. He did a good job in the workout. He still has to get himself in shape to play at this level, and that’s just natural. Regardless of what you are doing, it’s hard to get yourself ready and then play. So he has worked very hard. He’s a pro, no question about that. He knows what he is doing. He learns quickly, and we anticipate him really hitting the ground running and being a part of our football team here pretty soon."
Waters 36, played 11 seasons. He missed training camp with the Patriots in 2011 but still earned his sixth Pro Bowl.
"He’s been a very good player for a long time, as a protector, as a run-blocker," Garrett said. "He’s big, strong, physical, athletic. He plays with the right kind of demeanor. He’s been that way for a long time. You can ask anybody who has ever evaluated him in house or from afar, and everybody would say that. He missed training camp prior to playing in New England a couple years ago, but he had played the previous season, so that would be one difference. He didn’t play last year, so we have to respect and understand that, but again, we think he’s in relatively good shape. We’ll see what kind of progress he makes over the next few days.”
